I checked with my local Howard repair man whom I knew to have some very old original Howard service manuals, and he had a manual for what I interpret as a chain driven machine, this time for a McCormick-Deering 10-20 tractor (made from 1923 -1939). I have scanned it and attached it. Is this of any help?
Ian
PS: pdf is too large to upload. I will try and PM it.

Rodney will be drooling when he reads this. He has put together a very comprehensive history of howard machinery and old gems like that are priceless.

What about the lad on the extreme right? Hat, tie, coat and garters.
I wonder what the big tall fella is thinking?

Cheers Scott
I noticed the bloke on the right in shorts seemed a bit out of place. Looking at the photo again, it looks like the tractor has a number plate as well?

That PDF of the IHC 10-20 manual is a brilliant find. It also mentions the Howard Rotary Mouldboard, which I've seen photos of, but never actually seen one in person. Does or has anyone ever seen one? it's basically a giant spiral in place of the rotary hoe blades.

A photo of one would probably help.

Here is a Howard brochure with one in it:

It's not a spiral. Wait till I can post the files in full.

I scanned the whole manual as a single PDF file at too high resolution and it turned out 4.8Mb in size. I will try and break it down into two pages at a time at lower resolution. it is quite detailed and clearly shows how it is driven from the tractor. I would surmise that they would have made variations for the then common tractors, and the Fordson was obviously one of these.

Ian,

a big thank you for those PDF's. It'll take me a bit of reading to get through. I didn't know there was a Howard rotary hoe made for the 10-20 & 15-30, so once again, thanks.
