So you recommend this modern 2 stroke oil with detergents to be used in engines such as the Sunshine and Petter 2 strokes?

And finally the back cover. In the manual I found a letter from my father seeking repair parts for the motor in June 1963 when I was 11 months old. I don't know how old the motor was at that time but it was definitely still in use in the late 60's/early 70's.

Second page of the owners manual posted by Bartlett0815 states and I quote "1/2 pint SAE 30 NON-Detergent oil to I gallon regular gas". That is a 16:1 mix (1 cup oil to 1 Gal gas). With todays alky adulterated gas, I would use high test. less alky, and better regulation of the amount put into the gas. My son has found up to 27% alky in regular - death to a 2 cycle engine, and destructive to neoprene parts (seals and fuel system componants)> I would not use modern lubricants. TCW-3 OIL should work OK. They didn't have alcholized regular gas back when this engine was built

When I was a kid, I ran one of these on a small V-bottom boat. TC-3W is what we used in these, and I ran it for hundreds of hours with 24:1 ratio instead of 16:1.

Generally speaking, TC-3w is a 'two cycle 30 weight' spec. Most 'marine' two-cycle oils are designed to minimize oil fouling at the lower temperatures of a raw-water cooled outboard. The Clinton Air-Cooled ran higher combustion chamber temperatures than a typical outboard, and as a result, exhaust temps were pretty high, and that's one of the two primary reasons why they ran an impeller-pump in the drive- to keep the temperature of the drive leg from getting so high that it'd steam fog you every time you idled it down from high speed... but moreso, it made the engine a whole lot less noisy.

I never had a problem with TC-3W 2-stroke oil at 24:1... never stuck a ring or seized, never any damage or performance issues. After discussing it with several of my outboard mechanics, they noted that the 2-strokes were generally identified for 30wt were such because "for-purpose" 2 stroke oils didn't exist as they do today.

Given modern choices, I would probably pick STIHL Ultra, or some oher type identified for air-cooled 2-stroke oil over non-detergent 30wt.

Please don't call me a legend, it might make me a bit too proud of myself. But I must admit I sort of like the title. I think the real legend would be my father. He dropped out of high school in 1945 and joined the Merchant Marine, then did stints in both the Navy and Coast Guard. He continued his career in steam with DuPont for another 30+ years. One of the most intelligent men I ever knew. He could build or fix most anything. Both of my parents grew up dirt poor on farms during the great depression so they developed the lifelong habit of never throwing anything away that might be valuable for something. So Dad never threw away the Clinton engine manual years after the motor had been retired. I still have all his old marine engineering manuals from the 1940's, automotive repair manuals from the 50's, his slide rule and most of his hand tools. Dad's been gone since 1984. He is the legend.

So around we go. We're back to Cobba's post. Valvoline, which happens to be TCW3.
I like seeing smoke coming out the 2 strokes. An easy indication of oil there doing its job.

Yep. Your dad's definitely a legend Kevin but your still a legend for not throwing it all away. We all hear of this sort of stuff been thrown in the bin all the time.

Hi Kevin
At this stage I have no use for the motor and intend to sell it. I have had it going a few years ago and just wanted to have it running in case someone was interested in it. Thanks for the offer of the manual, but hopefully I won't be needing it, but will keep it in mind if the situation changes.
