Photo Tangyes: Searched 30 Years 1895 Tangyes 2HP Petroleum Engine

Hi I've been searching for 30 years to get an engine built pre-1900. At last I found one in New Zealand. It's a 1895 Tangyes 2 HP Petroleum Engine Serial Number: 787. The Serial Number stamped under the Brass Plate is: 1317. It was found at an old Saw Mill site back in the 1950's north of Auckland. Partly buried with the hot bulb sticking out of the ground. The bronze Hot Bulb was missing and a few other parts too. I bought it fully Restored. It was from a private collection of 50 odd engines and this was the favourite engine of the collection. I'll post some more photo's of it later on. Regards from Geoff.

Hi Geoff,
Very nice engine, Tangyes Petroleum engines are one of my favourite. I remember seeing this engine about 10 years ago, It seemed quite a big engine at the time, bigger than 2hp I thought but maybe my memory is not what it used to be. I am wondering if you could check the number on the block for me, I have it as 787 on the brass tag and 4121 on the block?
Cheers. Tim

How big is your smile at the moment Geoff?

You must be so pleased that after 30 years of searching you have what you wanted.

What is the next one you want?

Hi Tim, it's Serial Number: 787 on the brass plate and Serial Number: 1317 stamped into the block. You can see it on the 3rd set of photo's and the last photo Tim. Regards from Geoff.

Hi Cobbadog, I don't want anymore engines. I've got the Tangyes Petroleum engine, a 1912 Mason and Porter Made in Auckland, New Zealand by City Engineering Serial Number: 24. My first engine that started me collecting, a 1928 Lister "D" Petrol Engine, with a direct drive magneto. And I've got a 1956 Lister FR6 Diesel Engine driving a 40 KVA generator, Serial Number: 150FR6R6. But I have first rights on a 1903 Campbell 6HP Girder Portable Continuous Blowlamp Engine, it's a 1 family owned engine from brand new, which I would keep too. Regards from Geoff.

Hi Geoff,

Congratulations on the Tangye - definitely a very early engine!

I have to agree with Tim, the gas number seems to be too far out of sequence with other surviving engines. I can't be sure, but from you photo, the number looks like the number Tim is quoting.

A 4000 gas number sounds right for a 700 oil engine. (roughly)

Regards,
Wayne

G'Day Wayne, From the register i run there are 11 Tangyes with the two numbers, checking these more closely in what the difference between the two numbers are, Geoff's is the earliest and has a difference of 530, I have one at 863 difference, three in the 2000's different, one in the 4000's different, five in the 6000's difference and one in the 8000's difference which is the last I have with two numbers, from what the register shows is that except for one engine as the numbers increased so did the difference, assume Tangye was selling more Gas engines so that series of numbers increased more quickly
All the best
Kerry
