Default Onan 45EM Project

Well another Craigslist find. I am now the owner of a 45 EM. By all means its mostly a toy as I know it has a healthy fuel appetite. After cleaning the mud wasp nest out of gas valve it came back to life and made voltage. Hour meter says 1073. Looks like someone was in head recently. Any do's or don'ts? Is 6 gallons a hour consumption a accurate fuel number?

Thanks Kyle

I would guess that is pretty close for full load consumption.

I'm not sure about gasoline consumption.
But from the T-015 Gaseous Fuels guide it says that a 45.0EM uses 690 CFH of Natural Gas & 290 CFH of LPG. Hope that helps some. You've got an awesome set there with that 45.0EM.

690 CF/Hr natural gas is roughly 690,000 BTU/Hr.

Gasoline is around 115,000 BTU per Gallon, so

That math works out to 6 gallons of gasoline / hr.

Just about what my 45kva "EF" set uses at full load.

As a side note: Retard engine timing about 4 degrees when using gasoline as opposed to gaseous fuels. Backfiring through carburetor is usually the result upon engine starting is usually the result if timing is not retarded.

Thanks for replies all. I would not go to gasoline but keep it on propane. To clarify my question a bit I found the 6 gallons on a google search how does that relate to propane. I have a all electric house which I have a 15 JC on right now to run partial load if need be. Its fed from a 250 gallon tank. If I really got in a long outage the 45 EM would handle the whole load. Do I have enough tank for even a short term run? In other words run the 45EM for a few hours to warm everything back up.

45 EM will burn 290 CFH of propane at "Full Load" which equates to 8.6 Gallons per hr.

Though the 45 KW set would likely not be running at full load very often, so your consumption could be more like 1/2 - 2/3 of that amount. Still a bunch of fuel.

I would not get rid of the JC.

The 45 does love fuel.

I keep having a mental picture of the 45EM starting and that tank freezing up like a Popsicle.
