Default Questions on Onan 30EC Generator with Ford 6 Cylinder Engine

This is a great Forum. I have learned more about my generator in a couple hours of reading here than I have been able to in the 20 years I have owned it. It is Model 30EC 3R 3288M and serial 630726025. I bought it on a GSA sale for under $500.00 and it runs great and makes power. My problem is engine speed control. The throttle linkage is hooked to an electric control that I think is supposed to maintain 1800 RPMs. It is supposed to click and move to the correct speed when the ignition is switched on. It has an RPM pickup mounted in the bell housing and picks up off the flywheel. There is an electronic control module mounted on the panel beside the engine. The RPM pickup wire goes into this box and two wires come out and go to the electric speed control. There is also 2 more wires that I am not sure what they do coming out of the box. The electric speed control is good because I can put 12 volts to it and it opens the throttle but the engine goes wide open. I am assuming the module is bad. My question is am I on the right track with my assumptions and if so where can I get parts and manuals. I am running it now with vise grips maintaining engine speed judging speed by the voltage meter but it does not correct speed when a load is applied. Fortunately I did not have to use it when Irma passed thru but would like to be ready for the next one.

Thanks for any help

Just a curious question, I am going to assume in the 20 years you have owned the 30EC that it has operated correctly till recently?

The EC didn't come with electronic gov. So need to have numbers from the gov system you have.

If I remember correctly that governor should be made by Barber-Colman. Usually a blue control box. The 2 wires that you can't identify go to a remote speed adjustment pot on the control I think. You can check for ac voltage during cranking across the two wires on the magnetic pickup. Should be at least 2.5vac. You can also read between the 2 wires disconnected. Should be something like 150-200 ohms. Sometimes that pickup can get metal shavings on the tip. If you take it out, when you you reinstall it, turn it in by hand until it lightly seats and then back it out 1/4 to a 1/2 turn and then lock it down. Double check the specs on that though.

Billy,,,, did Onan use a Colman or Dyna-Master electronic gov? Only reason I'm asking, for some reason in my Onan files I've got some docs for the Dyna-Master, likely during my chase on an EK30

Barber-Colman or Woodward would be my guess. But 20 years ago there were several odd ball ones showing up.

It has never operated right and I did not know how it was supposed to operate until I found this site. I assumed it sensed voltage to regulate engine speed. Only last Sunday reading here did I know it was supposed to run 1800 RPMs constantly. That made it clear to me how the electric governor worked. I bought it for power outages in my greenhouses and for hurricane problems like Irma and have never needed it. Now that I know what I think is wrong I would like to get it fixed.

Most of the speed controls are pretty simple. The throttle should be shut when the unit is off, and go wide open when cranking, and then back off to maintain 1800 RPM. Most ones like yours have 6 wires. Two go to the actuator, 2 go to the speed sensor, 2 go to switched ignition power.

Diagnostics is pretty simple. If the actuator opens when you crank the engine, the you have power and the acutator is OK. Disconnect the speed sensor from the controller (Mag Pick Up, or MPU), and measure continuity. Should be 800-maybe 2000 ohms depending on which one it is. Then on the same wires, measure for AC voltage while cranking. If it's wide open, it's dead, replace it. No voltage, remove, clean, and adjust it. If you got power, MPU is ok, and acuator is OK, then the governor control is dead. They are almost universal and many kinds would work fine in it's place.

Barber Colman was the company name. Dyna-Master is the name of the control system. Onan also used Woodward. There is another company GOA. Governors Of America. Good company just doesn't have a good dealer network. The last time I checked.

The model number must be on the backside and I will have to cut the screws out they are so rusted. I will do that tomorrow if I get a chance. Thanks for all the information.

No, its not that modern looking. Its just a plain rectangular box about 4 x 5 or 5 x 6 inches. On the face showing it has the wiring diagram and 2 small dials. One dial says gain and the other speed. Not totally sure on that second one till I look again.

That's basically the same one as Billy showed you, his had a terminal strip and yours uses a pigtail.

Try Governor Controls
http://www.govconsys.com/#gsc.tab=0

If that is too rich for your blood you can try to find something chineseium on Ebay or Alibaba or something.

A quick internet search found this controller at www.partsfortechs, ESC 2301-a, on sale for $199.00. Can someone pull it up and tell me if it will work. It sounds to me like it will.
