Default Onan MAJB 3.0kv Ignition / Timing

I have a MAJB unit but dont have the serial or complete model number at this time but i hope you can help. I have a few issues with the ignition system at the moment. Seems the condenser has a intermittent fault.
The engine runs well and then just basically starts to miss. With a timing light attached you can see the flashes stop or miss. As this happens i get an increased arc from the points, then it stops arcing and the engine cleans up again. Of course the Genuine condenser is not available in Australia and must come from US. I want to try a different one possibly from another magneto/stationary engine.
Has anyone used a different condenser that worked well?
What are your thoughts on using a different condenser?
Im an Automotive mechanic by trade and would normally recommend using the correct condenser for the unit but thatís a five week wait?

Can anyone tell me where the timing pointer is?
I have removed the front cover (flywheel and belt cover)
Is there a TDC mark and is there Timing marks as well (eg 25deg etc.) and where is the pointer or mark on the engine?

A service manual would be great, i only have a Parts and Operator manual.

The other posts i have read on here give a points gap (.020-.022) and timing 19deg @ 1800rpm and 25 deg @ 3200 rpm, does this mean there is some type of advance mechanism under the flywheel?? doesnít look like it from the parts book.

Any info on the ignition would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Just about ANY ignition condenser will work just fine, in your MAJB. It isn't a part that has critical spec's or tolerances.

Hey Mike, check your PM's for manual info. Don't you need to install the condenser upside down for it to operate correctly?

Thanks for the help and the manual guys, very helpfull.
It has answered all my questions and more. After hours of reading last nite, the wife said...
Put that down... no more marine porn!

a common term at our house that applies to all boating magazines and catalouges etc.

I have a new automotive condensor and will try it tomorrow, and looking forward to getting the timing correct.

Thanks again - Great site

An automotive condensor did the trick. No visable spark at the points now.
Timing has settled down and is easy to adjust, engine runs smooth and quieter.

Thanks again,
Mike

Post a new thread with your model number... It's bait that the "smart guys' can't resist. Fresh bait works best though
