Default Need Service Manuel - Onan 4.0 BF-3CR/16000 RV Gen

I was given a 75 Monaco Motorhome in really great shape but the generator is running a bit rough. Found a bad plug, replaced it and runs better but not great. Mostlikely need a carb cleaning. Good spark but smokes a bit.

So after I it going I reved up the motor to see if the smoke would clear and on side if the generator output is out. One leg is 133v the other side is .08v. By looking at the generator stamped plate...it is a 240v unit with 2 legs of 120v So I assume that I blew out the stater or a doide.

Got any ideas on what went wrong and a service manuel on .pdf

Thanks guys for the look!

K

Kelly, with the information you posted, it would seem that you either have an Open Circuit on one Output Leg, OR your Genend is wired as a 120 Vac ONLY Genend. The only way to tell, is to dig into the Connection Box, and see how the Twin Stator Windings are connected to the load. You will have four (4) Stator Wires, labeled M1, M2, M3, & M4. M1 & M2 are one Stator Winding, and M3 & M4 are the other. If you are wired M1=Leg 1, M2 & M3= Neutral, and M4=Leg 2, then your wired for 120/240 Vac. If your wired M1 & M3= Leg 1 and M2 & M4= Neutral then your 120 Vac Only. If your wired M1=Leg 1, M2 & M3 connected together, but Isolated, and M4=Neutral, then you have 240 Vac Only. If you truly have an Open Stator Winding, then your going to need a new Stator, or get your rewound. None of this has anything to do with any Diodes, or the Exciter Winding, as if that were then problem, you would NOT be able to electrically Start the Genset, as the Starter System is ALSO the Exciter System, and your getting 120 Vac out in one place already.

Thank you very much BTPOST! That gave me a good understanding on where the issue is.

I plugged in the power cord to house current and low and behold 1/2 of my circuits are not working....not a generator power out put issue after all but rather a power distrubutor lost one side.

You are correct I have a 120v ONLY system.

Thank you for the wireing diagram...after some shuffling though the paper work that came with the RV I found the original Service Manuel which really goes into some detail on the unit. It's loud but it works good. Still need to tackle the carb...I think it's flooding a bet.

When I get sometime I will scan in the manuel and email it to you to pass on at will.

Thanks again for the input!

Kelly

If you will give us a place to send it, we will give you a manual. Fair trade, even swap.

Someone will be along with the manuals that you need. Here is the build sheet for your generator.

Regarding the Quoted post above..
My husband needs the manual, or some kind of instruction/detail, to remove and reinstall the starter on the onan generator (specific details of the generator are within quoted above).
It would be greatly appreciated for any help you could lend to us. Thank you very much. (incase needed: angelica.parker@ymail.com)

The 4.0BF does not use a separate starter motor. It is exciter cranked, which means it uses the generator section to crank the engine.

If you can't find the manuals Max sent you, we can resend them, but first check your spam folder.

I have a 4.0 BR 3CR/16000B 1763498331 Onan and that has been removed from an RV. When I hook up the battery, the fuel pump starts working even though the start button has not been pushed. Why?

Probably the wrong start solenoid. Happens all the time to people . You need a solenoid specific to your your unit.

Recheck the model number. It's probably a 4.0BF or 4.0BFA. As Max said above, if you post a valid model and serial number as well as an email address, we can send you the service and parts manuals.

We need to know where to send the manual, post or PM one of us an e-mail address & you will receive the manuals.

Onan Parts, who is a sponsor here has many parts for the older Onans. Sears Parts Direct or Cummins is the next choice. Sears ships directly from Cummins.

Hello -
I know I'm just new, hoping to fix that (I'll likely be posting a hihowareya shortly!)

Could you please send me the lit as well? I'm asking for a buddy - I believe he has the user & parts manual, but I wouldn't swear to it, and I /know/ he hasn't got the service manual. So, please send everything. My email address may be found through the board (I don't get a lot of SPAM on the address I use yet, and I'd really like to keep it that way. At least, until it becomes permissible to deal with SPAM generators using medium-to-large quantities of high explosive. I miss blowing things up for a living...)

Thank you!

JDK
