thanks to everyone that answered or sent me a e-mail.from what i found out flint and walling never made a gas engine.the early ones were made by almo the latter ones by woodpecker.what i have been told is if your engine is missing a tag.standing behind the flywheels on the left side on the block by the base if there is a M casted into the block like mine it's a flint&walling if it has a W it's a woodpecker. has anyone else heard this.if you have eather engine please let me know if yours has such a casting mark, thanks chuck

Hi Chuck,
Another "Newbee" to Smokstak. I work at Flint & Walling and also have a
1 1/2 h.p. serial #1857-k. There is still alot of speculation if F&W made thier own engines. If you notice your tag it says "Reg. U.S. Pat. Off." This suggests that F&W made engines that look like the "Woodpecker". Just recently seen an original decal that says the same thing. Also, the early engines (1901) were Charter Engines of Chicago,Il. Alamo listed "Hoosier"
(A F&W trade name) as an approved agent. I have seen one Hoosier/Flint & Walling 1 1/2 hp that is an Alamo. The Woodpecker style engine were first listed in catalog 100 dated 1915.
What is your serial Number? I am thinking about starting a listing of numbers and pictures. To answer another thread, if you have no tag the serial number is stamped into the end of the crankshaft. Standing behind the engine it will be on the left end of the crankshaft.
Thanks
Earle

I use a Flint & Walling water pump at my cabin in Michigan and the connecting rod broke and damaged the bottom of the housing. Do you possibly want to sell yours? If not do you know where I can purchase one?

Please advise.

Thanks,

Jim Sampson
