I like sealed relays, less chance of junk getting in contacts and sticking up pivot assembles

I'm guessing it has low hours from the look of it , but all diesels can run on just the crankcase oil if rings are bad, called runaway. Usually damages engine. So have a way to stop air flow into intake if it decides to runaway, that's the only way to stop it, short of maybe discharging a BIG tank of CO2 into intake.

I've heard of people using a book or plywood. Forget about rags, people say it will just suck them in and blow flaming oily rags out the exhaust.

Okay Keeper - Nice to talk with you on the phone. Let me bring the group up to date on this thread especially since it started in 2014.

Update: Today while looking through Craigslist I spotted the following ad
https://newjersey.craigslist.org/grd/6536211059.html . Since this ad is local to me, I responded. Emails then a phone call resulted only to find out the seller (Keeper) posted here 4 years ago.

Long story short, Keeper did a restore, had it tested at a generator shop in the local area, put it away for a while and later found out mice made the control box their home. Everything got pee'd on (typical for J series control boxes). Keeper replaced everything in the control box, but it never ran afterwards. When he attempted to start the DJB, it only made clicking sounds. He checked to ensure that the motor was not locked up. At that point he wants to sell as he feels it is beyond his capability to fix it, but he really wants to fix it to work again.

I took a quick look at the 4 pages in this thread and discussed a few things with keeper over the phone. After the mouse piss destruction, the original starter solenoids were replaced with off the shelf automotive solenoids, not Onan replacement solenoids . See a possible problem here....

I suggested to Keeper to revive this thread and let's help Keeper to get his DJB running again since that is really what he wants.

Keeper, if you can, please take good clear pictures of the inside of the control box as it look today.

I would like to focus on the solenoids in the control box to help Keeper... I don't have a parts manual or looked for one yet, but Keeper replaced the solenoids with off the shelf automotive solenoids and I'm guessing like the Ford solenoids. These solenoids replaced the Onan OEM solenoids. We all know that in the RV gensets, standard automotive solenoids will not work. I assume the same would apply to Keeper's DJB. What would be the results if the solenoid is the incorrect type when trying to start the genset? Keeper stated that he only hears clicks and that is all when trying to start the DJB. I always replaced OEM with OEM so I would not know.

Here is what I done to a 5 CCK that the previous owner replaced the solenoid with a Ford.

Replace the FORD solenoid with a NAPA ST71 with isolated coil.
Wired per instructions (jumper wire from battery side to one small terminal other small terminal receives ONAN start wire)
