Default Onan 7.5 kw Ignition Problem

Hello. I have this unit for at least 35 years have it in an enclosure that forced me to take of the info plate...and now I have know idea where I placed it..
The unit when it runs, runs perfect, I start it manually. I know it was 3 phase but I only use two and it runs on natural gas. I have ordered points several times from Cummins in the NE, thats all I really had to change.

Over the years there had been times when it ran for a week plus, then died, new points and it runs perfect again. Same thing this past week, ran for three days then died....But its a great machine when it runs.

Question I have is there anything I could do different to get the points to last longer ?
I really like this unit, quiet and work perfect for what I need, ignition been the only problem.

Thank You,
Chuck

Condensor! ! Go to napa auto parts for the points and condenser, change both condensor and points at the same time, bad condensor = burnt out points!

Check out #6 on this thread for the part numbers.

Might consider "Kirk Engines points saver". They are used by several here at The Stak and I have heard nothing but good about the device.

Pretty sure Onan did make an electronic ignition trigger set up for the JB, it is possible it was an after market item, but I do not think so. I have 4 sets that have this on them. The trigger mounts in the end bell of the generator.

Post a pic of the gen. I'm assuming you have a JB , but there are other models out there.

As far as other types of ignition see my thread

When you install the new condenser adjacent to the points, L believe it is a 3 mmf condenser. Make sure you get the correct one installed and retire the eninge using the engine-stopped procedure as described in 967-500.

Once you get it running, observe the points to make sure there is NO sparking as the point open.

Not sure what you are referring too. "engine-stopped procedure as described in 967-500"

Thank You,
