Default Onan DJB Genset - Just Purchased

Hello to all; My new/very old generator is beginning to look more like a new hobby more than a new toy. I am relieved to have found this web site, and really pleased to see the help being offered here. My Gen.#s are
6.0 DJB 3R/12482S Ser. 1172528891. I down loaded the Engine Ser.Man. 967-0751 and I am still looking for operator #, 967-0150 and Parts #, 967-0251.
The Genset index shows a DJB welder with spec S. Are 967-0153.and 967- 0253 correct for me. When I bought the Gen.it seemed cold to the touch and started right up after about 30 sec.heater operation. There was some black smoke when it started ,but that cleared soon enough. The Muffler seemed sound but boy is it loud. The The 240v meter was on the the mark .I dont recall what the 120v read. The amp meter showed approx. 25 amp output The Flywheel fan has a vane broken off. when I got It home and removed the fan shroud I was appaled at the amount of corrosion on the injection lines and governor assembly ect. Oh well sorry to be so long winded .Any advice ,help or comment would be very greatly appreciated. Thanks Keeper

Clean it up and enjoy it.

Was made November 1972. Spec S with a Magnecitor generator end.

Good find!

They will still be running in another 40 years with some good maintenance. A cloud of black smoke at start that clears up? That is good. Loud, well yes they are, heavy too.

I have a 12.5 just a little newer than your set. Backup power for the house.

You will want the YD gen. manual, above link. It is a large file, get a cup of coffee while it loads.

Max, his a Magniciter series, built before the YD series, still there may be some useful information in the YD manual.

FYI and interest, I have a JB (gas version) built to spec P, that is of the same vintage as yours. I refurbished it way back in 1970 with the help of the Onan Corporation. At that time I obtained a colorful brochure from the Onan Corporation entitled Onan J Line Engine-Generator Sets, Gasoline-Diesel-Gas. This is a 12 page brochure with cellophane overlays and fold outs that describes the design features of both the engine and the Magneciter. I would be willing to make and send you a color copy for about $15 or maybe a bit less. I sent one to Billy Schafer so he can attest to that.

Or, if you want the B&W copy on 8.5 x 11 in pdf I can send you a copy. I tell you no one builds such rugged generator sets like that today.

Get me an e-mail address & I will get you onan manual #967-500. It covers the J-series with magniciter digrams.
Isaac, thanks for correcting me. I looked at the date & not the spec. letter. That was getting to the end of the magniciter era.

Hey Jim:

Some misunderstanding here? I can make you a color copy of the Onan J Line Engine-Generator Sets, Gasoline-Diesel-Gas, not 967-500. 967-500 is some 50 plus pages. Where as the Onan J line description document is 12 pages in living Onan colors. The 12 pager illustrates and describes the J line electric plants. A few months ago I made a full size color copy plus postage for around $15. If you really like the Onan J line, I would highly reccomend you getting to see a copy. It covers the engine and the generator very in exscrutiating detail for the mechanically and electrically inclined. I do not mind going out of my way once again to may you a copy. The color copy will contain both A and B size pages. Maybe you should look at the B&W copy I will email to you. Before you say Yes, I will email to you a B&W PDF copy. Then I need to get make a copy and figure the total cost.

As for the 967-500, I could also send you a B&W copy via email pdf. No point in making a color copy of 967-500. This covers the Onan JB and JC Major Service information, including wiring diagrams.
