Blowing the dust off of this thread.

This past weekend I met Keeper and is author of this thread and owner of a 6.0 DJB.

Long story short, Keeper bought an Onan 6.0 DJB from a government deal auction site in 2011. The DJB was made in 1972. Keeper had it running and making electric and was checked to be in perfect working order by a local generator company, but mice moved into the control box, chewed up and pissed in the control box which ruined many of the components many years ago.

Keeper rewired the control box, but something went wrong. When he connected the battery a relay in the control box would rapidly chatter and has not pursued fixing it at that point. The last time the DJB ran was in 2012.

The DJB was thrown on CL and I answered the ad since he lives only minutes away. We chatted a while on the phone and he would really like to get it running again, but he admitted that wiring is not one of his strong points. I agreed to run over to his house and check it out. Not knowing what to expect I only brought a Big Fooken Battery (a gift to Keeper) and my Fluke. I did not spend too much time since it was near freezing, but I snapped pictures to closely examined the control box on my PC and share with the group. We eventually got the DJB to crank over which was the first time since 2012, but we did not put full effort to start it due to several issues. Cranking sounded VERY HEALTHLY!

Some of the issues that need to be resolved are two unattached wires which a good/clear schematic will help. Second, all wires need to be gone over using a schematic. The DJB cranks when the start/stop toggle switch is toggled to both the start and stop positions, clearly a problem.

Keeper has a schematic, but it is extremely blurry making it very difficult to read. I will download manuals including schematic.

I shot a quick video showing the problems that need to be resolved which can be seen in the following link ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHW2H8uCDx0

In addition I attached several pictures below showing the control box and loose wires. Once I obtain a clear schematic to figure out were the 2 loose wires go as well as a guide to checkout the wiring in general, I will return for "round two". Keeper's 6.0 DJB is a "keeper" if we can get it to run.

Our library of Onan documentation has tremendously improved since this thread was started in 2011. I hope the wiring diagram is better than what Keeper has.

Hi Bob. He is not ready to start it yet. After he rewired the DJB's control box it just buzzes from the relay seen in the video when the battery is connected. If the start/Stop toggle switch is toggled to both the start and stop positions it will cause the starter the engage. Also, there are 2 wires that are not connected in the control box. One of the wires is a thicker wire that leads to the generator head with no markings. In the video it is labeled with a "15", but the label was put on by Keeper and the number was for Keepers notes only, not for the schematics numbering.
