Default VF4 Polarity

New member here trying to resurrect a VF4 s.n.2435994. Can someone confirm battery hook up? One faded red battery cable goes to ground, and the other gray one goes to starter button, leading me to believe it is positive ground. The terminal clamps were pretty beat up so couldn't determine by size. I have not been able to access the wiengines.com site. Thanks.

Thmpr I am pretty sure it is positive (+) ground. Check the wiring diagram on page 14 of the manual. https://books.google.com/books?id=ei...page&q&f=false

Thank you, Radiodoc. I did not have a manual - that will be a big help.

I believe on that page there is a place to click and download the manual...it's in PDF format.

Carl, Your engine was built in April of 1955. Since your engine serial number is in the 2,000,000s it is very likely that your engine has a positive ground and is a 6 volt system. That would mean that your engine is wired correctly. Positive to ground, negative to one side of the starter switch. The wire on the opposite terminal of the starter switch should go directly to the copper terminal on the side of the starter motor.

It might be a good idea to polarize the generator before starting it, just in case someone has switched it to a negative ground polarity in the past.

Starters, dc generators, mechanical voltage regulators, and points ignition systems will all work equally well with either polarity. Sometimes the regulator contacts (and points too?) were optimized for one polarity, and will not last as long the other way around.

With the battery connected, briefly (a couple seconds is plenty) connect the Armature and Battery terminals on the voltage regulator with a piece of wire, and you'll be all set. If there's an ammeter, make sure it shows charging when the engine starts.
