Default John Deere D Magneto Trouble

Hi Guys!
I have a 246T splitdorf mag for my 1929 John Deere D that i have jut put in a new condenser. It sparks fine when i hook it up to a drill and spin it over. When I crank it by hand i get 2 sparks 2 misses and 2sparks and 2 misses again and so on. Is this normal. I have a wico C base mount that sparks everytime. I'm really not sure what to expect. Is a magneto supose to make a spark everytime? Any help is appreciated
Thanks

I have a Edison Splitdorf Mag on my 39 H JD. It sparks twice then misses twice. It is suppose to work that way.

If you have the correct dist. cap on it you will get a spark out of the top 2 terminals and the position where the bottom terminals would be are grounded in the cap to the frame so as not to overheat and damage the coil.

Wico mags have no reduction gear and spark every turn. The splitdorf has a reduction gear and only sparks half as often.

I would trade you for my wico C base mount that sparks every time if you would like that better... I am kidding of course.

The Dixie Splitdorf like yours and Edison Splitdorf CD mags for JDs are made to only spark on the compression stroke so have to be timed that way to #1 compression. The Wico C and XH mags spark on compression and exahaust stroke and if you get them out of time 180 can just switch wires and usually go on but that won't work on a Splitdorf or the early Fairbanks Morse DRV2 mags.
