The plate is loose in there but I cannot turn it at all
Would you be able to tell me how much I need to turn it and which way?

Are you sure we have the same pump because the plate is loose sitting there but it will not turn????? I’ve even put bolts in two corners and put a bar between them to try to turn it?????
This is a macson style B and that’s the only plate on the pump with information.

I was always under the impression that Macson's were abbreviated trademark of and made by McPherson and Son.
They made Macson's with bronze/brass bush's and later on in the 30's when they released Ajax pumps they had ball bearings or similar. ????

Hello all
According to picture you turn the stuffing box anti-clockwise to withdraw it without the liner and the liner pulls straight out.
I can't see why yours would be different to the model the tag is on......but in saying that, it may be different.

I might get a chance this afternoon to have a play, but this week is hectic.

Cheers Scott

Mine came out ok Jaybear, but i made sure that the stuffing box was not grabbing the plunger shaft etc.
You need to be certain that there's nothing else gripping it.
From there i do recall that mine was quite stubborn, taking quite a bit of elbow grease, and a good few floodings with my kerosine squirt bottle along the way.

Thanks Scott and Paul
I drowned it in CRC and oil yesterday so I will give it another go tomorrow. I have managed to get the plunger rod out with a shifter through one of the bottom holes so it can’t be the that. Anyway I’ll give it a go this arvo thanks for your help

Hello Mr Bear.
As mentioned.....turn the big square plate anti-clockwise to remove the plate or straight out to simply remove the liner/plate.
I finally got 37 seconds of spare time to take the plate off our pump. The pictures may help.

Cheers Scott

This one will let you gauge how much twist the big square plate to pull the only the big square plate

It may be hard to see but this one shows a little cast pin which slots into the slot in the liner. There are two pins and two slots overall.

Squirt it with Lanox or similar even some diesel.

As recommended above by Cobba Jaybear,..diesel,kero,heating oil,..any of those instead of, or even in addition to your favourite penetrant.
I would recommend drowning any of the problem area and backing off the moisture level from there.Keep wiggling and working the stubborn part by hand while giving it plenty of drenchings in between. The theory being with a part that is 'moving',that your working it 'to and fro' coupled with a continued dousing with the fuel oil, diesel etc, gives it a chance to clear particles from between the contacting surfaces.
Scotties internal view reminds me of my own pump, which had plenty of rust growth around the locking mechanism of the front plate as well.Mine was quite stubborn to remove as well from memory?
It might not happen tomorrow,or the next day,but persistence should get you there?

I know nothing about these pumps or how to rip them apart but going by your pic it is not a pin it looks more like a screw head. If this is the case start soaking it with all the oils etc and then use some of that heat on it to help it undo.
Having said that, wait until someone who does know about these pumps gives you the heads up.

Jaybear.......one thing i took for granted here was your level of experience unsticking old machinery.Looking at your first pic above i am reminded of my first hard lesson first hand, about the 'biscuit brittle' nature of cast iron.
I'm wondering have you got a similar story to tell us about the front plate?
I agree with Cobba on the nature of the pin, being most likely a shank style screw with no head and just a slot?
That might take some moving, but going along with Cobba once again.I think a number of warmings and soakings over a period of time would eventually see you win out?

Hello Mr Bear.
You've done very well. At least now you can get rid of the rust that hides behind the liner. A lot better job then what I'll probably end up doing. The liner will have to fall out for me to worry about it.

Now we need to go back a few posts.

Sound feasible?
Not a bad guess huh?

Cheers Scott

Thanks guys they were threaded, a bit of heat and some vide grips got em out. Yes Paul I did know cast was very brittle, I’ve been studying how to weld it up hopefully it turns out all good but i was not the one who broke every corner off of the plate my old man decided hammers and pry bars were the way to go. XD thanks you all so much for your help I will definitely post a video on this page of it being run by my CS lister. Cheers
