My guess is that it is a bit different than commonly available SAE 40 oil. Here is more than you want to know about lubricating oil for natural gas fueled engines.

When you say Cat V8 generator, are we talking like an Olympian that has a Chevy or Ford V8, probably 150kw or less, or a larger set based off of a Cat diesel engine?

Most of the Chevy/Ford V8's are living on whatever your favorite 15-40 'diesel' oil is, and doing fine. (Rotella, Delo, Napa, Whatever brand you like)

Good point. I assumed a larger set, based on the oil container.

Itís a 300 kw. The people at The bulkpetroleum said SAE 40 is fine.

Nothing special about Cat oil. Just comes in a yellow bucket with a higher price.

That being said, you may need one of the specialty natural gas engine oils. Just any ol' 40w may be a bad idea.

With all due respect - I advise caution when trying to economize where engine oil is concerned. One oil related failure will easily cost many times more than the difference in cost between a premium quality oil and a "less expensive" oil.

Wayne 440 beat me to what I was going to say but good advice is worth repeating. Skimping on oil is a poor way to save money. If the CAT oil is really pricey and you want to save but be smart about it, I would contact CAT directly. Tell 'em the model and serial number of your genset and ask them which oils they can recommend, besides their own. They should be able to give you some concrete recommendations. And be careful if they say something like "...any oil that meets spec xxxxx.zz.." There are many ways of testing oils, and many ways of interpreting the results AND the standards they must meet. This is NOT a clear cut and absolutely objective process. If they won't give you a specific Shell or Pennzoil or Kendall or other name brand product concede defeat and keep paying for the CAT oil. Your bean counter may hate you but your engine will love you for it.
