A guy can measure a piece of metal all he wants, and not get a measurement that reflects standards, as Dusty mentioned above... and one more:

Let's say the metal is stamped...

That means, it's been placed in a press, and whomped into some shape.

Just get something close to, but larger in thickness, cut it to dimension larger than the damaged area, then warm and form it with hammer and mandrels... until it fits the damaged area you see. Cut away the bad, weld new piece in place, and call it good.
