Default ID year and place of manufcture of Superior Gas Engine

I went to see a running 35HP superior this week and bragged about Smokstak as being able to get any info on any old iron. Now I need to prove up. I need the manufacture date and place of this old superior 35 HP. The ser.# is 8926, can anyone help?
Walt

Information on Superiors seems to be hard to come by. I have one that belonged to my grandad, but I don't know when he acquired it or if it was new or used. The tag reads: Manufactured by * The Superior Gas Engine Co. * Springfield, Ohio* No. 9011 35 HP * For * The National Supply Co. * Sole Agent * Toledo, Ohio Pittburgh, Pa. I believe that the design or pattern for the larger 4 cycle engines dates to 1906. They made large 2 cycle engines for many years, also, and these seem to have become the basis for the Ajax line of engines in the late 1930's. I have a 2 cycle engine that looks like an Ajax but is tagged *Superior Gas Engine Co, A Division of National Supply Co. Springield, Ohio Made In U.S. A.* that may date to 1927. Superior also made some geared pumping engines and a few small engines. I think that some engine numbers are in the 20,XXX range, so I would GUESS that a number around 9000 would have been produced around 1912-1918, though I don't know how they numbered the engines, and different companies used different numbering schemes.

Patrick is probabaly pretty close on the date 1912-1918. My 35hp ser# is in the 4300's and was built in 1902. This is from recipts I saw from the 2nd owner of the engine, who was also the last person to acutally pump oil with it. This recipt had my engines ser# listed. This is the only way that I know the mfg date of my engine. Anoter interesting fact I read on the recipt was the location was not listed as Oklahoma, but as I.T. which stood for "indian territory" since Oklahoma was not a state untill 1907

It looks like the design is older than 1906 then. I have some illustrated parts lists for Superiors that are probably from the late 20s to mid 30s. It's all been wet and rotted, and is just about gone to pieces. It seems like that's where I saw a copyright 1906 on something. Trouble is, copyrights don't date printed matter as to date of origin in many cases. Evidently Superior and National Supply Co. had a long and close relationship, so any old National Supply material might be a good place to look for Superior information.
