Default CAT C-18 550kw POS

Scratched another kitty CAT today Its one of three ships service generators and was installed during this winter in dry dock (replacing a 12v149 Detroit that ran away last season). We’ve had load sharing and cooling problems since. Well today she let the smoke out with just over 2000hrs on the clock! I had two C-18’s paralleled to supply enough power for our bow thruster then with no alarms or wanings the Oiler smelled smoke, the engine was stopped, off the board in reverse power and heavy electrical burning smell in the generator room The remaining C-18 carried the load of the thruster (at neutral pitch) while I put the last remaining 12v149 online. No diagnosis yet, the engine is electronic control and only ramps up to 1400rpm instead of 1800, then shuts down on undervoltage alarm. I am not too familiar with the interface between the ECM and generator on these sets but the engine is detecting a fault and shutting down. Undervoltage would lead me to think excitation or AVR...

I bet the better part of a half million shekels could have repaired the damaged Detroit

The last diesel engine running when the end of the world comes will probably be a 2 stroke Detroit.

Maybe 1400 is as fast as the engine can drive it due to shorted armature windings? Did it start smoking again? Have you tried running the set unexcited?

The engine does not sound loaded when running at 1400, it does not begin smoking it the short time it runs before shutting down. I was busy with other duties while the chief did some testing and I’m not sure if it was putting out zero voltage or partial... I would like to do more diagnostics but seeing as it’s a new install, it looks like it the powers that be want it left to shore technicians under warranty.

Does the boat constantly tilt to the port side??? I bet that 12V149 has twice the iron in it!

If I remember right it weighs just under 13,000lbs engine only! The ship is 18,500t dwt so it really is a drop in the bucket... we have 250t of fuel and almost 20,000t of cargo onboard right now.

"Bashing the Detroit for leaking oil"

What does he think that little dam all the way around the engine is for??

I told him that if it’s not leaking, he better put some in it!

trouble is without CAT ET software you cannot do much to the C18 engine.

There is from memory a seperate control for the generator .

You can get CAT SIS ( service information system included parts and how to tear down put back together ) from Here https://www.autoepc.com/index.html?q...r=363&ca_ord=3

Its not available to anyone but a CAT dealer generally same goes for ET ( electronic technician software )

Warranty fix if in warranty is best and cheapest option i would think.
