Default Polishing the Brass 1A21 radiator top shell

I finally found a nice dent free radiator and I want to polish the top brass shell. After cleaning it and attempting to polish it, it appears to have a hard finish. Is this true? Does anyone have any experience getting down to the brass on these?

Thanks

I have a 1M21 which is the manual start version of yours. My radiator top was dented some but I wanted to polish it anyway until I started working on it. Mine has like a hard finish and didn't polish like I thought it would. I painted mine gloss black. Larry
