Default Key Words in the Database Index

There was a lot more to read on the old Smokstak. Hmmmm.......

I am an avid reader of the archives. Lately, however, I find that the "new" search mode cannot perform quite a few searches that I used to make pay off with lots of info.

I understand that a search words with few letters aren't allowed now, but I find that a severe limitation.

Here are some searches that I formerly used profitably that now don't work: IHC, International M, Bosch FX, Bosch FX 2, Bosch mag, F-M, 2 cyl, etc. You get the idea.

The problem is, those are sometimes the words or letters used in the postings. Now, I can't find posts that occurred just a few weeks ago, unless I get lucky.

I hope that one day, the great programmer will permit one letter and two letter search words, if that would help users of the archives find what they seek. There are a lot of searches that a four-letter word just isn't part of info that has been posted and is sought.

Try finding info on a Bosch 2 cyl mag FX2, (or is it FX 2.....). If it helps to illustrate my point, I think it is used on a 2 cyl New Way and it is ed. 19 or 21.

Here are words it won't allow: 2, cyl, FX2, New, Way, New Way, ed., 21, and 19. Don't laugh, this is an actual example.

On the old site, I would have found almost all available info and then some. It needed a page turning system, though.

Just an idea or two that might improve useability of a key part of this fine web-site. HelloGoodbye......

Let's build us a list of two and three letter words right here and I'll add them to the program.

Don't forget that the old program took from 7 to 10 seconds per search. This one tales less than one/tenth of a second.

Advanced search: Join words with AND, OR and NOT to control your search in more detail. (Try searching "Wico AND Novo" in the search box. The word AND in the search means that you want BOTH words to be in your search results.)

Add asterisks * to use wild cards in your search.

*banks will bring up Fairbanks and any other ___banks.

Fair* will bring up Fairbanks and any other fair___.

Don't overlook that you can search TITLES only or the entire text of all posts.

Search titles for: Fairbanks AND color = you get only 14 posts out of 82.000 posts in a tenth of a second! (The old system didn't have all this! )

Be aware of which forum you are in. If you do a search in the SmokStak Main Forum, that and the Archives is where your results will come from.

If you want to search the entire site and ALL forums, you must be on either the Home Page or the Main SmokStak Forums page. Or, click Advanced Search and select the group of forums you want to search from. Daunting I know, but you get out from it what you put into it. Your mileage may vary.

Cool Re: Key Words in the Database Index

Ek, Ab. I'm sure if I give it some thought I can come up with a few more.

How about F&J?
