Your engine is a Associated pony 3/4 hp. Looks like it is missing the recoil start? Still has the very hard to find cast iron washing machine base. Very nice find!

It looks like the recoil is there on the other side the worst thing about them is the coil the pot metal insides seem to deteriorate and the coils go bad.

Exclamation Re: Maytag! what is this one?

Seen them as cheap as $75 - with a bad magneto. The mag is virtually impossible to find. 2 years ago, a running one went for 1350 at an auction I attended. The pony's were a poorly designed engine, and were recalled after a few years. They were a problematic engine and had quite a few issues, especially with the magneto and gearing. The early ones had a fine toothed gear that had virtually no lash. great for timing but with little clearance between the gear teeth, dirt and lint built up and ended up breaking the poorly cast zinc mag castings. Associated tried to fix with a coarse toothed gear set but the now present lash had the same result - busted mags. Eventually Associated gave up and recalled the engine. Seemed that more were returned than were sold! They are fairly rare and are hard to find parts for. if yours is free and has spark - great! if no spark, or parts missing or broke, good luck

Andrew
I met a guy one year at MT. Pleasant Iowa who worked for Associated, and he
said that they advertised, try the engine for 60 days, and if you didn't like it they would take it back and refund your money. People were using them for 60 days and that getting there money back. Plus they were a poor design that did
not hold up very well. The man told me as they got them back , they were throwing them on a pile behind the factory. He said it was a huge pile, and before it was all over it darn near broke the company.
The one i had ran, but the gov. gave me trouble. I didn't have the recoil starter for mine either. The recoil starter was different, in that it used a flat belt instead of a rope.

The first version of this engine, called Colt was the real troublesome one. This is the second style and more of these are around then most people seem to think and are quite often confused with the Colt.

Steve, here is a picture of the Colt Engine taken from the Amanco Engines, The Story of Associated Manufacturers' Company LTD. The same picture is also in BYB. Also note that the Colt Engine is a 4 cycle engine.
