Default 1/2 HP upright project.

Finally finished this upright. I bought it in pieces in a package deal about 10 years ago. I did get it running with a donor carburetor but it was badly worn with lots of play in the rod and main bearing. Not having a rod I decided to try to bush this one. I know it has been brought up before about not enough material on the rod to bush but I didn't have anything to lose. What I did was make a thin bushing and sweated it in place with solder. I cannot see it going anywhere. It worked great. Then I bushed the piston pin end the same way and made a new wrist pin. Next I made and installed new main bearings. The last part that needed attention was the original carb. It had a broken off main jet stuck in the body. I was able to drill and extract it. Then I made a new one in my little lathe out of some brass stock. Then used a 1/8 inch compression fitting to make the gland. Not totally correct but worked great. Lastly made the wood skid and box out of oak. The box will exactly fit a model T coil and a small 12v. rechargeable battery. The pulley is a little unusual. It appears original but I am not sure. Has anyone run across one with a large pulley like this? Thanks for looking.

Looks great, does the pulley have a part number on it?

No part # that I can find. It is made from very thin cast iron. The engine has small traces of green paint as does the pulley. I am fairly certain the paint is original. No traces of red at all.

Here are some close-up pics of the pulley. It is hollow and very thin. Definitely cast iron but I can't tell if it is one piece. Almost looks like it is made from three pieces?? It has a very nicely made notch for the flywheel pin and is pinned to the hub with a round wedge.

Turbo, nice job! Pulley certainly looks factory, but should have a part # on it if Maytag. Could be was fitted with that pulley from the factory for a special use? Think this may be the case as the paint does look original with the engine. Boy that is a lose fit over the flywheel hub. Would have to have been machined special for this. Maybe was an inbetweener to use with a model 82 instead of the wooden tube? Just my thoughts.

I agree with Kevin. Maytag sold a lot of these uprights to other manufacturers. Several cream separator companies, Moto-Mower lawn mower company plus many other applications. It was fairly popular engine in its day. The pulley on your engine just makes it unique. Maybe someone else has one with a similar pulley, Glad you posted pictures.
