Default Case 18-32 crossmount engine/clutch oil seal

Hi Folks !

I'm working on a 18-32 Crossmount Case.
When it runs, a lot of engine oil (=liters !!) is dissapearing in the flywheel house.
My quistion is; is there any sort of oil seal between the engine and the flywheel house ??
I opened the flywheelhouse and there is a bronze ring behind the big the cast iron flywheel cap and after the last main bearing. That's for trowing oil back I suppose? (=see picture).
But can anyone tell me, (or pictures are even better !!), if there is also some kind of oil seal inside the flywheel house ??
In this tractor there wasn't, but it looks there belongs a sort of flange with seal in the flywheelhouse. ???

I hope some of you experts can help me.....

greets from Holland

Hello Again,

Here is a picture from the Cast iron flywheelhouse.
In the hole in the left you can see a felt washer/seal.
Thats for the gearbox.
Around the right hole you can see 6 little holes.
Is this supposed to be to attach a flenge with (felt)oil-seal ?

let me know....

Greets, Marco.

Hello Marco: The parts book shows part # 09496A called --- plate for crankcase cover,right end. This appears to be the same size as the complete cast crankcase cover and appears to have a built in seal that would bolt to the 6 holes in your picture. It is simply a tin shield that fits between the crankcase cover and the main frame with a built in seal. I will get my computer whiz to scan the page and post the picture when she is available. I probably have some of these in my parts shed as well.
Jim

Marco: Here is a picture of the inner shield. Sorry my batteries on the camera went dead before I could get more pictures.

Marco, I don't know what the part # is but it looks like you're missing the whole sealing ring. There is NO felt washer only a casting that is machined to close tolerances to follow the brass beveled portion of your crankshaft and then turns out to follow the straight round portion. It fits flush or slightly under the end of the crankshaft where your pulley extension and flywheel start. I will have to look to see if I have a picture of mine when I was in it. No wonder you were leaking Liters of oil if that was missing...

Marco, now that I looked at your pictures again I remember that the backside of the cast gear case housing had the bevel cut into it. The ring that bolts on with the 6 screws fits to the crank with close tolerance but I don't remember a felt washer. I will try to find my pictures.

Thanks Texasbest,

I hope you can find pictures....
Otherwise I think I'll buy a big oil seal and make a flenge myself on the rear end of the crankshaft...

Marco, I'll eat crow now. there is a felt washer at this location. I found my pictures. The housing is very thin where it come back to the crank. You may be able to find a narrow enough 1 piece seal if you'll make a housing to press it into. I made a makeshift seal out of packing material. I should have gotten Olson's to cut me a 1 piece felt seal.
Good Luck finding or making 1.

Hi Stakkers,

Here is an update on my project;

I bought a new oil seal and made a new iron ring to hold for it.
On the crankshaft I put a thin sleeve.
Also for the axle that's going in to the gearbox I made a new oil seal instead of the original felt washer.
I hope it is gonna be working fine.....(You would think it's better then new !!!)
The picture gives a good impression, maybe it's a good inspiration / idea for you guys to !!

Bye, Marco
