Default Stover CT-2 Won't Stay Running

1939 Stover CT-2 won't stay running after running and getting warmed up. I have had WICO mag rebuilt and have great spark. Engine runs for about 20 minutes, then starts to struggle, I can adjust air fuel mixture, and will continue to run, but if your not right there to make adjustments, engine will die. Then it it is really hard to start.
Any ideas?

Even though it has been gone through your mag might be dropping off when it warms up. Try closing the spark plug gap down to about 0.015" and see if things improve. If that doesn't help, look to your fuel line check valve. It may be sticking.

Hoppy,
Tell us a little more about your engine. Does it have the original fuel tank under it with the original check valve? Are you running it with the choke closed? Are you running it near to rated speed or do have it slowed down considerably? When the engine starts to fail, does it go down like someone turned off a switch or does it give a few random hits before it dies? Is it rich that you need to open the choke/close the needle valve to revive it? Or is it lean that you have to choke it/open the needle valve to revive it?
What was done to the mag during the "rebuild"? Does it still have spark capable of jumping a 1/4" gap when the engine quits? What is the spark plug gapped at?
When the engine is restarted after it shuts down, is it rich/flooded, i.e. does it smoke black when it finally starts? When the engine is revived or restarted, does it run another twenty minutes before it again falters or does it stumble again immediately?
The more detailed information you can provide, the better we can help you to diagnose the problem.

Kirk

Kirk, Still has original fuel tank and check valve, I've made sure check valve is working, choke is open after starting, normal speed, it acts like it is loading up, hits a few times then slowly starts to quit, if I'm close by and don't have my hands full of other things, I can adjust the mixture screw in and it will continue to run, a little black smoke "rich", haven't checked spark jump, and don't remember spark plug gap, mag was done by man that has rebuilt mags for years so trust he did correctly, when restarted, which takes awhile, because it acts like no fuel, so I chock it and then it floods, it will run for a bit say 10-15 minutes then does the same thing all over again.
I'm thinking it is in the fuel line, like maybe a vapor lock, but I'm just guessing at this point. Engine is stored in garage now and will be a few days before I get it out to work on. Busy rebuilding hydraulics on tractor last few weeks.
Thanks Hoppy

Choke wide open? How about doing the opposite, barely open the choke and compensate accordingly with the mixture needle? It seems a lot of (my) engines need the choke mostly closed to maintain a higher intake vacuum and velocity, with the needle only open an 1/8 - 1/4 turn. I think the key indicator you're noticing is the difference between a cold engine and when it's finally warmed up pretty good...

Well you're right again boys. Here's what I found out. Check valve was free and clear. The spark plug was set at .030 and I reset to .015 as Brian suggested, and closed choke to start, 5 pulls on flywheels, and then only opened about 1/2 to 3/4, as Gilbert suggested, and it ran for hour and half. Shut it off. 3 pulls later and full choke started up. I remembered that at end of last season, I did drain fuel.
THANKS GUYS for your help, we'll see how it works at the State Fair in August.
