I saw the boiler drawings today that were submitted to Alberta boiler branch in 1912. The 32hp simple and 40 compound Canadian Special are the same boiler. The drwg is listed as 32 simple/ 40 compound .

David, They are the same basic boiler. They would be like this boiler below. The differences would be where the indentations for the upper cannon bearing would go, as the gearing and driver wheels are of different diameter between the two engines. I was told by old timers the fireboxes were a smidgeon taller on the 40 hp. To accommodate differences in gearing and wheel diameters. I guess a tape measure and being at the right locations could settle that?

This is the Kolar 32-120 hp Reeves double simple here in Montana.

This is 40-140 hp Reeves now at Osage, Iowa, for comparison. This was taken at Cedar Falls in 1992. Gary

Call up Larson welding. There's a 32 DS there right now and a 40 hp boiler. This argument can be settlled once and for all.

Tim, I would still wonder if the US and the Canadian 32 hp double simple arrangements were the same? The US may have the exact dimensions, but I know the barrel is larger on the 32 hp Canadian Special double simple, than the US 32 hp double simple. Gary

Yep. US 32, CS 40. Might make a difference. Canadian barrels 2" larger.

Congrats,on the purchase of yours Reeves engine. I would suggest that you check the boiler with an ultrasonic tester to know its condition. Your engine looks to be very complete from the auction pictures.
