VERY nice looking L you have there!I believe i'm going to jump on the bandwagon with this one.Consider leaving it original.I found an original John Deere 40-C early this year.Rusty, touches of paint here and there, original decals still showing.I can't tell you how many people told me to "leave it alone".Many collectors said they would love to find one like that.It got more attention than my painted up D.......directly beside it.The "original look" is very big in the antique car AND tractor world these days.In alot of cases they fetch more money at resale.

Coming back on this subject.

You askted Advice Wanted.

We are in the middle of an coople horse sleigh restauration projects
Those are most made of wood and gos back sometimes 6 til 8 generations ago 1700, 1800, 1900.
The rotting proces on those ones have to be stopped including the woodworms.
Have been reading some books about restauretion carriage experts.
They told original on those ones almost not exist specialy with wooden items always stayed in wet carriage shets and halls.
And most of the old horse sleighs have been throwed away or burned.
You have to be retored those ones otherwise the last ones also wil fade away.
Wel we try to use natural old products on those ones like waterbased paints and the leave gold.

With old steel tractors it is an way different.
Try to save to old original ones with there old patinas from 100 years ago.
And there are enough ways to keep them in perfect condition including to stop of rust or rotting.

That is my advice.

Chris

That looks like a great tractor to start with, regardless of the direction you go with the resto. I prefer the original look myself, but to each his own. In you one picture looking at the top of the engine, it looks like the pre heater on the left hand exhaust manifold would suggest it is to have a Bennet style air cleaner, not the Donaldson "bee hive" style like you have in one of your pics. I've seen a number of different variations. Who knows for sure what they did, when, and for how long? I am not home right now, but will take a few pics and post them when I get home. I have 2 W's. One with the Bennet and one with the Donaldson.

To Caleb, Mike, Tim, Brothers, Jon and Thresher. Thank you all for the nice comments and advice. I know what you mean about keeping the original look. I can appreciate this as I have seen some great machinery left as is, but I lean more towards a nice clean and shiny one. This one has no paint left on it, at least none that I have found yet. There must be some down there somewhere. I will probably find some during tear down as I am going to go deep. Engine will be gone through completely, clutches, cooling system, oiling system with new brass lines, check the transmission, build up wore shafts, replace all seals and gaskets and anything else needed. I have always wanted an oil pull since I was a kid going to shows with my grandpa. Might have to sell a couple of my other tractors so I can rebuild this one, but I finally got my dream tractor. I will be thinking of not painting it but I like a nice looking one and am going to keep this one till the Lord takes me home. Also rubber pads will be added so it can be run in parades. Thanks again guys! Chris

Here's the Bennett style, like I suggested yours might be, on the other W. Both tractors are 1st year, 1928's. the one with the Bennett has an earlier serial # than the one with the Donaldson. don't know if that means anything? Hope these help.

Thanks Jon for taking your time to get these pics to me. Very interesting. Now you have me wondering what it takes! Mine is a 1926 and I have no idea. If it does take the set up like yours with the Donaldson, then I will need the pipe with the valve going to the exhaust. But mine does have a valve ( that has been broke ) down on the manifold where the pipe threads in. Anyone know about these?

I noticed in the pics of Jons model W,both types of systems had the bolt on pipe to the carb. My L has no bolt holes for a pipe, so looking at other pics of model L tractors I think that mine takes the Donaldson beehive type. Of course I could be completely off as this Rumely experience is new to me. Any other comments from you Rumely pros are welcome!

You need to go by the parts list book. It will list the correct air cleaner for the serial number ranges.

I think Jon is correct or your exhaust may have been changed.

Here's a pic I found of a friends L. It's a good shot of the elbow and how it slips over the carb top. The heat exchanger is like the one i posted earlier with the donaldson. It's good for a raft of casting numbers too.
