Default Heller Aller Windmill

Can Anyone tell me how to find out what year my 35ft. tower Heller Aller windmill may be. I found the casting number on the gearbox that identifies it as an 8ft. fan, but I don't know if there is any way of telling what year this whole thing may be.

The next question I have is the script that would be on the tail. It looks like there could be a few different things like Baker MFG. Napoleon Ohio or Baker run in oil ect. I don't know how to find out what is correct.

I have restored different things in my life cars, boats, ect. but this is the first windmill for me.

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks so much

Find a copy of A FIELD GUIDE TO AMERICAN WINDMILLS by T. LINDSAY BAKER. Your local library should be able to help you. ISBN number is 0-8061-1901-2. There is no better reference book on windmills then this one. There are several pages about this windmill manufacture . Some pictures of the tail.

I own a few of these and have some of the factory catalogs. If it says ‘Mod 8’ on the back that’s basically the last style oil bath they made up to about the early 1990s. The pump division sold to Hitzer in Berne Indiana, and the windmill line ended. From memory, those are I think the 1940s and up. Mod 8 would be a back geared mill, the Mod 28, which was a direct stroke oil bath, also with a 8 foot wheel, just slightly different pitch to the sails, usually had the ‘Run in Oil’ script on the tail vanes.
