Problem is, I have only been able to find CCK and CCKB Parts manuals. If anyone has a CCKA manual (and mine is the "contractor" model) it'd sure come in handy...

I didn't even know about that treasure trove of Onan manuals... but having searched, there is nothing in there about my particular genset. Didn't think it was an "oddball".

There has to be manuals somewhere. Some of the retired Onan techs here on the site might have what you need or know where to get it.

I also went through the Twinslan site. Didn't find anything. I will go through my files

Lots of old orchard machines used single and twin Wisconsins modified with a pulley on the pull start and a generator/starter belt drive. Several solenoids a couple of toggle switches, a voltage regulator and a push button. I'll go look for a service manual,,, I can't remember if it was a Girette or orchard ape, and the spelling is really suspect. Ugly, but really worked well for many years.

I think you are correct, Jack. It should be a 10.0CCKB. The new codes are:

A - portable, Manual Start, Non-Remote
J - 120/240 volts 60Hz, 1 phase, 4 wire

Look at the Twinslan site and pick up all manuals for a CCKB

927-0223 parts
927-0754 CCKB Engine Service
927-0404 CCKB Engine parts

I think you're right too. That is a confusing choice of letters on Onan's part because nowhere do I see a "CCKB" on the label! Thanks.

I do have the CCKB parts book which shows that I should have armature 201-1335 (60 Hz, 120/240 volts).

Now to find out what an exciter-start generator uses...

I looked in the Optional Equipment section for RV generators. They are apparently exciter-start, as there is no listing for a starter motor and the housing illustration, which uses an external blower, does not have the dimple for the starter nose either.

But they call for an armature 201-1314. Guess they are not the same - I was hoping for an easy conversion to exciter start. So back to plan A - see how much trouble it is to mount an external starter motor.

Is the stator the same for the exciter crank and the pull start? It would not be that hard to do an armature swap.

Here is the parts manual: http://www.twinslan.net/~n0nas/manua...0(05-1989).pdf

The armature for both pull start and electric start seem to be the same. page 25-26 shows the parts needed for electric start. hey have "Key 2". I don't think you would need anything but the start solenoid. You would use a plug in battery charger for starting battery charging.

Thanks. I have that manual already and those pages show a control box, not a starter motor. So you are actually seeing that the armatures are the same for exciter start and pull start? Why do they have different part numbers? Or did I look in the wrong place.

I'm not worried about any relays or other electronics, I can rig that easily enough. But I doubt I'd be able to find a complete control box and the way this generator is mounted on the cart with a 4.5 gal fuel tank I don't think it would fit physically in the normal location.

Anyhow I need to remove the end cover and look at it again. I suppose I could just disconnect the existing leads from the exciter brushes, briefly apply 12 volts from a car battery via heavy cables and see if the thing turns over!

No, you wouldn't want to disconnect the existing leads from the commutator brushes, as those supply the field, which will be as necessary for the machine to motor as it is for it to generate. You'll need decent sized cables and battery and good connections for it to work.

It is also worth checking to see if the series field winding is present and simply taped off somewhere. If so, connecting to that will work even better. Check to see how many wires are going in and out of the field coils themselves.
