Default Onan 4.0CCK round style generator head

I am trying to convince my dad to get this 4.0cck, round style generator head, guy wants $200 I will try to offer $150 for it, supposedly the fuel pump is bad, if he gets it, I would get a universal replacement from ebay, he wants to get a gen for some remote land which would cost to much to run power to, just for 3-4 weeks of camping each year, he wants to maybe convert to propane or bi/tri fuel

what do you think of it? condition / suitability for such, I know the cck s are the "bees knees" ( im a little young to be using such a dated reference- haha)

fyi. I know its 120v only, can't think of a need for 240v , if so, a cheap autotransformer travel voltage converter (~5000w "inflated" rating) for permanent needs (eg well pump) or temporary use, (eg welder) an other gen set

cant beat a cck.. gravity feed it before you buy, make sure it has no knocks or does not smoke..

if it runs and puts out 120 volts 150 is good.. if not 100 tops.. there are always more.. a 120/240 unit is nice to have.. never know when you might need 240v

sometimes the fuel pumps stick after sitting for years with fuel in them.. the bottom of the pump comes off and you can let it soak and see if its frees up. sometimes a good tape on the side will do it.

I have a customer. That has a generator from a remote land. Five hours on it and he paid 900.00 for it. Now sits in his barn with a burned out gensection. Two years and still looking for parts.

Grab the CCK.

CCK for 'camping'? Hmm. is the 400 pound weight going to be OK?

Otherwise CCKs are great.

Watch the fuel pressure - CCK carbs want pretty low pressure...

"stationery" rv camping camp, and if I remember correctly the ckk s want a max of 3 psi fuel pressure right?

I would pay $200.00 for old American iron and copper machine before I would spend $400.00 on a new lightweight import. Easier to find parts for a 40 year old Onan than a 2 year old no-name import.

As yellowlister mentioned, the pump may only need a cleaning. The Facet pump comes apart for cleaning and 90% of the time that is all they need.

I think all Onans are ~ 3.5 psi. Car gas pumps are at least twice that and may force open the float valve and leak gas out the carb. Fire hazzard.

Five PSI is the max you can use.

Gravity feed works. Only need tank ~ 1/2 ft above carb, putting tank ~10ft above carb make ~ 3 psi at carb. But if you run gravity feed MUST use a shut off valve or crankcase can get full of gas if/when carb valve leaks during storage.

does anyone have the installation (like compartment ventilation hole sizes and ect ) and engine manual for this cck or my other cck(4.0 cck un style head)
since I want to make a little hut for this on, with mini stud walls with open faced rockwool insulation held in with hardware cloth or chicken wire, for sound abatement, the other cck also, just on a little cart / trailer.

and I don't want to cook the gens with out enough ventilation, also what do you guys use for oil (I know I'm opening of a can of those invasive "crazy jumping worms asking opinions on oil)

synthetic or dino, weight for temperature, ect. I was planning on getting another frantz oil filter to put on it ( the tp filter on my cck after installing it I poured the old oil I drained out of it back in to the gen after straining it and the toilet paper filter noticeably lightened the color of the oil after a few hours of running it, afterwards I changed the oil in it.)
and after a few short interval oil changes for cleaning it out a bit, I was planning on running amsoil or mobil1 5W50 or 15W50 for all temps, what do you think?

If it is to be used at a camp only 3-4 weeks out of a year then you would be best to have a portable fuel tank like an outboard motor boat tank. This way you can always bring fresh gasoline to the set and the boat tank has a primer bulb so you can prime the carburetor. Also, make sure when you are DONE using the generator for the season that you let the engine run with the fuel shut off so the carburetor runs DRY. I would bet that the fuel pump is just gummed up with old fuel. I think that the gravity feed would be your best bet.

I still got my gen running off a small 1/2 gal gas tank for testing. So it's easy to add a splash of stabilizer at end and let gen run out of gas.

If you don't want to treat all your gas, can add a 3-way valve at main tank and can have 2 tanks. One main tank and a separate small one to run gas & stabilizer thru lines and let carb run out of gas.

That means to me that you could wave FOUR, 20 dollar bills in his face and take it home. Can't go too wrong at that price.

fyi a 4.0 cck with low compression heads can be cranked and started on 2, 8ft 8 awg for 16ft total I think it was 8 ft pieces or possibly 6 ft pieces, for battery cables but the key is good tight crimped and soldered connections
but it cranks a little slow

16 ft of 8 gauge is .01 ohm. At 300 amps that's 3 V drop in just the wire. And I suspect they draw more amps than that.
I think Onan specs out a fatter wire.
If they crank too slow you can burn a commutator.
These are exciter cranked engines , and they suck a lot of amps.......the saying goes you need a Big Fooking Battery.

The 1958 5cck I own that is in a factory enclosure, has a battery rack that is supposed to fit the narrow but LONG battery that is used to start a 1950's BUICK V8! 850 CCA http://www.antiqueautobattery.com/ba...3ED-Delco.html

THREE HUNDRED AMPS?!? To crank a little tiny engine?? I've heard that these Onan's somehow have inefficient cranking motors but that's crazy!

My exciter cranked 6-1/2 kW Kohler LEAPS to life just using a crappy, small gauge *booster* cable off of the ordinary battery in my car! It just makes a little spark when connected.....

Cranking slowly won't hurt anything. It's when the cranking stops completely for too long that's a problem. The amps are less (otherwise it wouldn't stop cranking) but sitting in one place would burn the commutator. Eventually. Battery would probably go dead first though. We called that phenomenon "stall burn" on the railroad..... Caused by using the engine to hold a train on a grade.
