Default Onan 5JB @ .20cents a lb

Model 5jb 3E/2581D, Serial 72C689064 A phone call from a friend, he is at a scrap yard and seen a Onan in the pile, asking price .20 cents a lb, was I interested? Of course. When he dropped it off, I have to admit I have never seen anything quite like it. When he told me what it weight was, I think I paid to much. It does turn over with a battery. Trying to find any info on this, seems like a orphan. Why use a JB for only 5000 watts? Dan

I'd say you did OK at .20c per pound, it would cost me twice that in Texas.

That will buff out! 20c a pound is less than i usually pay for something in locked up condition.. well not always..

How does the magnaciter look? Is the carb broke?

Made 7 of 62.. factory contractors edition

Looks like it has a vm Italian diesel engine fuel tank on it

actually looks like a 5.0 cck gen end after looking at it.. would make it the best of both worlds if it is.. the jb engine would only at about 70% at full load

Yellowlister, good call on that one. I went out and pulled the cover off, and sure enough, the carb is broken at the mount. The gen end is a ordinary spin and make power, nothing fancy. Dan

More pic's, Odd ball tank, replacement? Sure fits nice. Claw on scrap machine is stronger than Onan carb by the looks of it. You would think they would handle something old like this with more respect! Wiring is as simple As I have seen, Even the old cck's are more complicated. Dan

At most of the scrap yards I know of, everything that comes in the gate is treated like scrap - the thinking is that if it was worth more than that, it wouldn't be there.

If you are careful you should be able to weld up the carb body, or get your welder buddy to tig it. Otherwise nothing too tough about fixing that one up . Cool score. Cheers Dan

Looks like only the flange of carb is damaged. Should be able to get a welder to weld it up.

TIG welder supposed to be best, can control heat on that very well , down to almost nothing. TIG can weld razor blades even.

The broken carb was a new or rebuilt, happen to have though 2 other carbs off of onan motors,(don't know size). I will build one out of the 3. Nice to have spare parts around. Dan

that was a good deal at 20 cent a pound! i bought an air compressor at the junk yard for 45 cent a pound.it was 80 gallon tank ,with a 5 hp motor & dual stage compressor. couldn't by the tank or motor for that.why do some people have all the luck!

It is not luck. It is good to have friends who are in high places and look out for me. The amount of quality old machines of all kind thrown out is incredible. This could get off topic fast so I will stop here. I have "rescued" 10 or so Onan's in the last 5 years from different salvage yards, a very small drop in the bucket. As always, the right place at the right time. Dan

I've got a friend with a half ton visiting up near Owen Sound. You really don't want that thing cluttering up your yard, so I'll have him drop by this morning on his way back to NB and take it off your hands...

hi boy Another crazy canuk collecting onans. I am off grid near Apsley Ontario in the summer . I got my first onan 3 years ago had other brands before that. Currently I have 3 onans , funny part is that I can not stop looking in kijiji for more to pick up. Found 2 4500 watt units last summer for $100.00 the guy was sending them to the scrap yard too.

The best thing I like about these units it stopped my fluorescent lights from flickering and they have full pressurized oil lub . They run forever if you keep on feeding them . I use propane in the summer and gasoline in the winter . The one I use for main service started in - 30 c weather a month ago no problem.
