Some people have been asking about converting to electronic ignition. So here's some links I have book marked on electronic ignition using car and other moduals.
In past for my JB I had thought of using them and a Chevy Saturn coil (it is a waste spark coil, towers are in series.), but turned out my JB coil was good. Believe the Saturn coil has a ~ 1/2 ohm primary so may need a resistor in series with it to comply with min coil resistance your ignition modual may require (to limit max amps). Could use any waste spark coil , motorcycle or what ever. I just happened to have some Saturn coils, they have only 2 low-voltage terminals , the primary so easy to use. 1-st one seems most comprehensive, others are listed in no particular order. http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/ignelect.htm <-------------- very good info ( see 1/2 way down) http://www.geocities.ws/loudgpz/GPZheiModForPoints.html --- GM HEI Ignitor for Points https://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=133370 ---- Smokstak, new idea for electronic ignition on MCCK https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdR9...ature=youtu.be --- Youtube, Onan CCKA to Chevy GM DIS Coil http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/ignelect.htm --- Ignition & Electrical Solutions for Small Engines & Garden Pulling Tractors https://www.smokstak.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75460 ---Smokstak, Onan Electronic Ignition and TriFuel... IF you go with hi-energy coil it likely will draw more amps than original one. IF your Onan used a single fixed resistor for bat charging you may need to adjust it to maintain previous bat charging rate.
Do want to compare new amp draw to old. If it's a lot more might have to consider adding a 120V bat charger to provide (or supplement ) all bat charging and running loads. So you don't draw more amps from genhead charging winding than it's spec'ed for. I know after 1975 Chevys used hi-energy coils, and power supply wire to sparkcoil was MUCH fatter than on reg coils. Depending on amp draw want to check amp rating of relays, switches, wires in circuit that supplies coil power. |

Hey Len,
Just got done perusing the website on the top of your list. Besides lots of good advice, he's got dual tower ignition coils for $50 that look like you could use with Onan twins. Nice find. tom |

Seems they changed the spelling of link to my 1-st link ( the best one).
Looks like this is the new link http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/ignition.htm Seems they changed the spelling of links to some of my other links too. |

May I offer an alternative Len? GY6 Chinese scooter CDIs are cheap and easily adapted using either inductive or Hall sensor pickups.

Interesting. Is there a site with wiring diagrams or some description of the inputs on these modules?

Thanks. Lots of good information out there. A nice downloadable tutorial in pdf format here: http://www.jr-richscooterdoc.com/Hel..._explained.pdf
Also, Amazon has some reasonably priced pickup coils in the $6 to $8 region. Search Amazon for "trigger pickup coil". |
