I have a 1988 6.5 KW Onan MCCK generator in my boat. The coil is shot and I want to order some parts to get my genny operational for the 2017 boating season. In addition to replacing the coil, I would like to upgrade my existing points to electronic ignition. Can you point me in the right direction? That is a very good illustrated tutorial that you put together for us, but it does not work for me because I need a new coil. A new or used OEM coil will be a rare find, so can you recommend an alternative solution?

I just upgraded my 7.5JB to electronic ignition and Propane using the points but it triggers a GM HEI module ($25) to fire the coil. The same can be done on your setup. The points trigger the module but since its low current they wont wear like the do with conventional points circuit (practically forever). I'll post some pictures of what I did because the coil on the JB is 6v not 12v. Its cheap and the best part is not having to figure out where to stick magnets on the flywheel and muck with the timing in the process. As for the coil I believe there are still coils available I read in a thread somewhere, try a search.

I know it's not a cck but I have a JB 7.5 I successfully converted. The same circuit can be used on any onan that uses 12v and points.

Don't know how to go back and edit my post but I got a label wrong on one of the wires. Anyways this is the correct image. I mounted the HEI module to an old Pentium heat sink I had laying around. Amazon has the specific heat sink for the module. In the one picture my points are located above the oil filter. I removed the condenser and ran the wire into the control box where the new ignition circuit is located. I left the ballast resistor on the coil and since the HEI module uses 12 volts, I connected the power to the front side of the resistor (not after ). The transistor and R1 I mounted on a small breadboard and used sealing heatshrink to cover it. Using this circuit I was able to make it more reliable since the new points won't wear because of the low current switching. I'm also able to still adjust the timing by adjusting the points as stated in the manual.

Make sure you remove the condenser from the points when you install the circuit in fig 1 on my picture
