Knocked us well and truly back on track with that contribution Darryl!
Thanks very much.
I'm wondering if you made an enquiry about the 'gettability' of that nice pump?

That's a good outcome Siz.I'm guessing the outside interest in trying to purchase has prompted the owner to take a few steps to preserve the old machine?

Hit the nail on the head there Paul , know them well and no chance of anyone buying it at the moment, on the list to be fixed up and working again.
Cheers.

Hi Siz,

Maybe next time you are looking at this pump, check the flywheel hub for numbers. I recently have been working on a vertical one and noticed 3 2's stamped across the face of the flywheel hub. Can't see any reason other than a serial number.

Might be hard to see with the paint on, photo 2.

Regards,
Wayne

Thanks Hugh, I'll go and have another look. I'm sure it had Danks on the end. Doesn't matter, if it's available, I'll try and get it so it won't go to scrap. I'll line it and make the missus a nice big flower pot! -cheers Neil

A fellow collector sent me a pic of this pig trough that he purchased just a few weeks ago.Looks to be in good order. The Danks galvanised pressed end type troughs I have seen recently out in the paddock.I don't think the examples I saw were terribly old.It would have been nice if I was allowed to bring one home.
Scott,..?.. my apology for a slow reply for that windmill tail that you posted here.I don't know if I'm asleep at the controls or the results are late appearing here?Thank you very much for dropping that pic in!
Danks copied I think a 602? Aermotor, and dubbed it "Cooee".The tail is identical to your pic retaining the iconic Aermotor horizontal 'v' rib.I don't know how close the copy was as regards the rest of the mill.I think the 'Z' pattern Southern Cross mills also borrowed wheel design and various other details from Aermotor?

Bit of an update on the Danks pump , bore is getting re sleeved and the owners are wondering if anyone knows the original colour the pumps were painted ? There's a few places with a grey colour left on it before it was sandblasted.
Any info would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Siz

Another Danks collectible jumped into the tray of my ute on the weekend.
This was rolling around in the paddock at an old ground tank not far from Hanging Rock in Vic.
I didn't see the brand until I took a closer look at home. This windmill pump helped solve the mystery of 'maker' for an identical unbranded pump that I have owned for a few years.

Another comparison, apologies for shabby dumbfone pics. With the two pumps together I decided to dismantle both and compare. Both are serviceable, and I have a supply of the leather plunger buckets. These pumps only employ a single leather bucket.I have them both assembled again temporarily with nos 3/8" ww screws and nuts.Originals were 3/8" ww coach heads with square nuts which were all pretty much past reusing.I plan to fish around to try to find some identical nos replacements. The pumps are a well made and a simple design. The top gland and bottom flapper can be serviced with the pump still fully fitted in its working position. The plunger valve used a leather seat which is easily renewed with a nitrile washer.A soft seat is used usually where the pump is asked to work with a low pick-up pressure. This is typically the case at a dam or creek and similarly where groundwater is 'close'.The bottom valve is a leather flapper. One of those was intact enough to provide a pattern for later reference.
