Default Engine Speed

What speed should I expect from my 72? The slowest speed at which it runs smoothly is about 1400 RPM. Is this usual? Likewise, I cranked up one of my 92s after cleaning up the fuel pick-up, which did not want to run at a show last week. It was turning 900 RPM. Is that overly fast for one of those engines?

Exclamation Re: Engine Speed

The 92 runs at about 1150, the 72 twin about 1200. The 72 speed is an average. If you load it to fire at every TDC, it will hold roughly 1050. The 92 develops about 3/4 HP, the 72 in the area of 1/2 to 5/8ths. The 72, being a throttled smaller bore engine has to spin a little faster to make the torque it needs to compete with the 92. Even though the 72 is throttled, it will get better 'milage' on a gallon of gas, due to the smaller bores
