Default CCA Battery size for 3RM21 generator?

Being I have no manual, I want to use the lightest weight battey needed to crank this over. A car battery works great but I would like to use maybe a motorcycle battery or a lawn tractor battery. I don't have either one, so I don;t want to just buy one and have it not work. Anyone know how much it takes to turn one of these over?

Fordeisel69-

I have a portable "Jump-start" battery purchased at Walmart. It has a 22 Amp Hour Gel Cell battery, and the box it came in claims it is capable of supplying 600 Amperes for the time it takes to jump-start an automobile with a dead battery. While I don't fully believe such a claim, it has worked to start a car with a dead battery on at least a couple of occasions.

This doesn't directly answer your question, but may give you an idea of how a lawn tractor battery might work for your generator. How does the size of the engine compare with a lawn tractor's engine?

Another thing to consider, is how you will keep the battery charged. Does the 3RM21 have a built-in charging system? Might it over-charge a battery that was too small? Does the generator have a battery box or tray? If so, does it look as if it were designed for a particular size battery?

Thanks Fred,

To answer your questions, the engine does indeed resemble a lawn tractor engine, however the size of a starter on a lawn tractor is very small. These generators do not have have a starter, but rather a Field Exciter, which basically uses the generator portion to crank the engine. When using jumper cables and a good car battery, the engine starts off real slow and then speeds up, almost like there is not enough power. It appears this is the way it is designed but I was nervous of buying a battery too small, have it not crank over and not able to return it.

This is a bare standby generator and there is no accessories. No battery and no gas tank.

If you have an AUTO-ZONE store in you area look at their heavy duty L/G battery. The battry is rated at 425 Cranking Amps.
