Default Onan JB Prefab enclosure Options

Good morning
Planning to move my JB, BGA and other Gen sets from PA to Wisconsin in early October. Not going to have a shed so I need to come up with a respectable generators enclosure to put the generator outdoors. New neighborhood is nice and I need to find a nice enclosure. I know Onan JB enclosures are like hens teeth but does anyone have one they would be willing to sell? I can rep ain't it but need some options. Any reccomended sources for empty generac enclosures that would fit the JB? Will power it off natural gas near the meter. Any suggestions? Thanks Gregg

PM me, I have an enclosure for a JB you're welcome to. Not sure what it will take to ship it though.

If you want to get the actual enclosure from one of the guys who offered, try uship. They quickly shop a multitude of trucking companies.

They could probably lag bolt the enclosure directly to a pallet. If you can ship it from and to a business with fork lift the shipping cost will probably be less than $100. If you do business to residence it will be a couple hundred more but still cheaper than making your own I'm sure.

Thanks to BRae from Michigan, I was able to pick up his spare enclosure last fall. I am finally now in the process of preparing the outside pad. I have a brick house with the gas meter outside. How far from the structure and gas meter should I plan the generator enclosure pad with the JB? Is 3 feet enough space? Hate to clear the area and then be told it is too close to the gas meter or house. Anyone have advice? Better to ask now! Thanks all.

Gregg from Wisconsin.

Gregg, best to find a JB installation page, usually in the JB operators manuals. Leon N might have some of the specifics. I have a factory enclosed JB and it is right next to my gas meter. Now as to venting the air flow to and out of the set, My engine cooling air discharge points away from the house. The fan housing, my set is NOT a vacuflow, is unobstructed.

Thanks. I will await Leon's expert opinion as my JB is a Magniciter and not a Vacuflow either.

Thanks for the details! Lots of good info but nothing about the distance from the meter. A google search came up with a 3 foot clearance so I can make this work.

If this installation needs to be inspected, you might want to talk to the inspector, I have no idea what the codes call for.

Gregg you should get your hands on a copy of the Magneciter equipped JB Owners 'annual and Parts List, Onan document 967-320 and the Onan tech briefs on Installation Information For Onan Electric Generator Plants, T-014 & T-029. These document s were written back in the 1960's and provide valuable information that was current in that day.and age. I followed the Onan recommendations back in 1970 and my Magneciter equipped JB has been operating very reliably since 1970. Make sure you comply with local codes about locating your standby plant close to the house or the gas meter.

One big improvement or change was the advent of synthetic lubricating oil. For many years now I have been using 5W20 full synthetic all year round with no need to to make seasonal viscosity changes anymore. My JB is exposed to below zero temperatures as well as 90+ temps in the Summer. Just make sure every start runs long enough to drive out the moisture.

You have one fine machine, the likes of which wil never be reproduced again.

NFPA Standard 37 has good info about generator installs. It is often adopted as part of the governing code for municipalities and their AHJ. You can check your local code to see if it applies.
You can view it online at this link.
