Post Onan 20KW

I am trying to restore a 20KW Diesel 20.0DL4-3R 6598C with a Onan L423 D Engine. I am not sure what year it is. I am looking for parts and service manuals. I don't no much about these type generators so any help will be great.

Need a serial. No. That will tell the mo. and yr. of manufacture. The 3R in there says that it is 120/240v.single phase and can be remotely controled. Good little unit.

Denny I will get the SN today when I go to the shop. Thanks for the info, I need all the reassurance I can get with it. Seems some kid took it a part and of course could not put it back together, he added insult to injury by selling off some of the stuff. We have all done it, I just gotta undo it.

Rob:
That is probably the best machine Onan ever made and in my opinion well worth returning to service. One of the nice features of that one is all of the regularly serviced engine components are all on the right side, starter, alternator, fuel pump, injectors, etc. By all means add a low coolant temperature shut down system, be it Murphy or whatever. The high engine temp shut down does not work if you loose the coolant due to a failed water pump or hose. Other than that, almost bullet proof.
Let me know what you need for parts, have some and can head you in the right direction for about anything.

The SN on the genny is H 830672425. For staters on parts I need a control panel, and the generator head cap. The rotor and stator seem to be complete. I also need on the Engine an oil filter adapter, starter.

Your gen was built in Aug. 1983. You might have to talk to Cummins about some of your missing parts. I finally started to go through my mess of stuff and I have parts sticking out of everywhere but I don't recall anything that you need. Too bad you are missing these things, however these parts can still be found and you have a good little unit to start with.Good Luck with your project. Denny

I recently acquired an Onan L423 Power Unit with a clutch and I want to try and locate a generator head that will mount up to it. I am going to try to start it this weekend and once it is running I will be hot to locate a genny for it. Let me know if anyone knows where there is one or what I should use for numbers to list it under the classifieds so as to be able to make the best combination for a 20KW generator unit. Single phase 120/240, able to be hooked up to a transfer switch for a standby for my house. Also need to know what to watch for in the way of a transfer switch. Thanks, Eric
