Retard the magneto, roll the engine over to compression TDC.magneto drive linkage should be adjusted so the mag trips when the piston is about 1/2" out from TDC. Advance spark timing lever, roll the engine thru again;the mag should trip Before TDC.

Bill, I timed my 20HP so with the mag in reteard position it would trip at TDC so when you advance the mag it fires BTDC. You have two adjustments. The timeing gears and by putting shims behind the mag mount to make the mag trip sooner. Worked for me.

I know less than anyone about timing of these engines but I will note on my engine the mag eccentric on the sideshaft is not keyed on the sideshaft. The eccentric is keyed but not the shaft. You could therefore change the timing if the mag relative to the valve position. I would think you would not want to move the eccentric unless you had a reason but I was wondering if other Superiors were like this or if my engine is missing the key way in the sideshaft for some reason.

Jeff I have a 25 hp superior and my mag eccentric is keyed to the side shaft. I dont know if the 20 hp are supposed to be keyed or not.

Jeff,
I'm pretty sure my mag essentric or lobe is keyed to the side shaft.
