Default 1937 Caterpillar RD 4

We are working on a 1937 rd4 model 4G, we have got to the point where the fuel system is bled and it is injecting fuel, have smoke out the exhaust but it just will not fire, not even with a small shot of starting fluid, what could be the problem, injectors were serviced, fuel rack is free and new, clean fuel?
If it casts a shadow it can be restored

Air in fuel system biggest problem, squirt oil into cylinders to raise compression, spin pony with compression on full to develop heat.

I think the RD4 is a Cat Diesel, correct? Some of the old Cats had the exhaust coming from the pony motor run through the intake of the diesel engine through a tube to heat the incoming air for the diesel. Make sure that tube is ok and not putting exhaust gas from the pony motor into the diesel.

Hi Rick,
from memory I think your pony exhaust does not go thru the inlet manifold of the diesel to aide quicker starting.

I trust you are aware that the pony engine is not intended to be used like an electric starter motor.
For really cold weather conditions you may have to crank the diesel over for 10 to 15 minutes on full compression, with the fuel rack in the shut off position, before the cylinders of the diesel will have enough heat in them to allow a start.

Our Antarctic U series D4's took 8 hours to start from a cold start by the time they ran a kero fired heater box around the diesel and pony. When things were deemed warm enough a hour or so on the pony got things conditioned for a good clean start.

Thanks for the replies, you are correct Eddie, the exhaust is a separate little manifold strait out the side, not through the diesel manifold, we had the pony turning over the motor for a good 20 minutes or a tank of gas in the pony, all it did was smoke on the diesel side, we are thinking the valves may need ajustment, it's in side a heated shop, so its warm

I have a 1936 4G. On mine you absolutely must bleed it at the pump using the bleeders behind the line nuts. Just cracking the line nuts won't work.They are a pain to get at if you don't have the special wrench. Then you can crack the lines at the injector. I would check the valve lash. Also check that the compresion release is working as it should. No exhaust heat on a 4G only coolant. Mine is also fond of the smelling salts. good luck!

Make sure the injector fuel bar is free, check for fuel to lift pump, check lines to lift pump check vale at tank check flow coming out of tank . basic first then on to bleeding injectors .
