Default Onan CCKB starter motor

I have a Gravely 450 which has an Onan CCKB. The engine is model: MS/1271G, serial number: 37C953779. The starter motor is: MBG 4134 B. It was starting but the starter motor was making some strange noises - so - I took it apart to clean it and stick some grease in various places. It has a bendix assembly not a solenoid. I put it all back together and now it runs backwards????? There are four brushes. Two of them are wired to the end cap and two of them are insulated from the end cap and wired to the field windings. I tried putting the end cap on rotated 180 degrees. Still ran backwards. then I tried rotating it 90 degrees. The wires are long enough to do that one way, still runs backwards, but not long enough to do the other way. I was going to rotate the end cap 180 and then try the 90 degree thing again but haven't tried that yet. Any thoughts? If I should just buy a new starter motor where would you suggest to look? Thanks - Marinoniblue

Are the Positive and Negative leads supplying power to the started hooked up correctly? What happens if you reverse them. If it grounds through the starter body then look at the battery to be sure that the Positive and Negative are not reversed.

Ben - I forgot to mention it, but I did try reversing the leads, and it still runs backwards. The tractor is negitive ground. - Marinoniblue

Double check your brushes. Make sure the paired brush 180 opposites are wired together as a pair. Rotating the brush set does nothing.

Is the field permanent magnets or wire wound electromagnet? I'm guessing wound field coils since reversing the battery does not reverse the rotation. Either or you need to move the brushes 90 degrees if there are four brushes.

I remember some deal from years ago, polarizing the armature...is there some chance he zapped it to favor backwards? I'm a bit rusty there, might have been in 6th grade! (in the Northern hemisphere).
