Default Onan 6.0 mdje prestolite starter

Hello fellow stackers.

Anybody know of part number 191-0443 24V lying around?

Mine is still working, but its a 1978 model and getting tired.

Options are:
1 Rebuild this one brushes etc..
2 Purchase aftermarket one.
3 Purchase 2nd hand one

Also if anyone has the Prestolite number for this item, I have searched the Prestolite web page without any luck.

I did find this...

http://www.psep.biz/store/onan_alter....htm#AHSPL0030

Scroll to the bottom, hope this helps someone else.

I have had good luck rebuilding the Prestolite starters on my J units. Some of them I do myself, if all they need is under-cutting & general maintenance. If windings or bearings are bad, I send them to a rebuilder. I also usually open up the shift solenoid & clean out the contact ring & flip the contact bolts if they are worn.

Hi and thanks for your reply. I agree, this is a 1978 model and I have rebuilt it a few times.
Flipped the contacts in the solenoid too
It has worn bushes, one blackened winding in the rotor, worn brushes, and the end cap of the solenoid is broken in the center where the return spring hangs out.
I will compare that cost to the cost of a new one, and make my decision...
Wonderful machine.
Incidentally, my Detroit 3/53 starter solenoid packed up just as we were drifting towards an active volcano! I started it with a big screwdriver, and later rebuilt it, using a 2 Euro coin as the moving contact...<grin>

Ok Just to help other people with this issue in case you have it.

I have found the following:

This looks exactly like my Prestolite starter....

Has anyone done this conversion?

well both starters will work IF you have a 3 bolt starter bracket if you only have the 2 bolt bracket only the prestolite starter will bolt up !

HI RichardL. Thanks for that, sheesh I have been so busy, GPS packed in, radar fried by lightning, and just installed the new second hand one...

I would like to buy a new starter, and rebuild mine. Mine is EXACTLY like the one in your photo. Another thing is that a friend's daughter is coming to visit her parents on a boat close by, the daughter is going to bring my starter in her hand luggage. Those new replacement parts are a lot lighter on the pocket and the scales.

I will get back to you if I have no option, be sure of that but don't hold it for me, if you can sell it, sell it...

thanks...Mike.
