Default Fairbanks Morse 6 Hp Z Motor Governor?

Hello All,

Helping a neighbor with his Fairbanks Morse 6 hp Z hit & miss.
We got it running yesterday, but need to adjust the speed of the motor.

I need to slow it down a bit.

To slow down the motor am I correct to loosen the springs on the governor?

The motor is running so fast I am afraid to start it again without making some type of adjustment to slow it down a bit.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Pat D

Weaker springs will slow the engine down

What model 6 horse do you have? there should be an adjustment thumb screw beside the governor, but the linkage to the throttle plate good also be out of adjustment. and have the throttle open. Shorten the rod and see what it does. You can manually hold the throttle rod closed to stop it running away.
