Cool Re: Stover Cam - Crank ref marks

Second Image shows Crank Gear , The Mark where it lines up with centre of the Governor Weight , a touch out of line with Serial Number on Flywheel , also showing Crankshaft throw position , key way is ' not ' in line in the position shown . I have just provided this detail in this image to provide info . Of what has been found . Noticed . In this position No Marks Mesh together it is only to dhow what has been found .

The positioning of these ref marks , provided is showing far more information , that just alignments noticed . The Key way is not pointing up , nor in alignment , in this position , Key way is positioned to the immediate 'right' perfectly horizontal . Crank throw half way . Vertical . Serial number on flywheel which has a mark inner further not quite in alignment .
No attempt has been made to adjust Timing on Exhaust via the Cam Gear , or Rod .
The positioning of Serial number and what looks to be V on inner face of flywheel is also playing a role in planetary gear alignment .

Cool Re: Stover Cam - Crank ref marks

Would there be any more .? Reference marks .
Only ' 1 ' of these ' 2 ' reference marks lines up , or attempts to mesh with both the Cam and Crank Gears , and that is for when Just as the Webster Magneto Trips just before TDC , I assume . Ignition reference .

I understand by Power of the Past Vol 3 detail , that ex valve timing is performed 1st and then 2nd Ignition Timing .

Could I assume that the reference marks for the Ignition Timing were the '' last settings '' made on the cam gear . ? As the mark references no longer mesh , for the Cam Gear Exhaust settings which has been moved to Ignition timing which shows as last settings made . ?
THIS IMAGE SHOWS WHAT I ASSUME TO BE IGNITION MARKS ATTEMPTING TO MESH . WHICH IN THIS POSITION IS JUST AS MAGGIE HAS TRIPPED .
I ASSUME THAT EACH TOOTH ON CAM GEAR CAN BE IN REF AS DEGREES .
IMAGE SHOWS WHAT IS ASSUMED AS SAY 10 DEGREES BEFORE TDC . ? Approx .

Cool Re: Stover Cam - Crank ref marks

I am assuming the 2 mark ref on Cam Gear 1 is Ex and the other is Ignition .
Again the last setting made on this engine were Ignition .

Does the Cam Gear need to be moved to set Ex Timing .?
Then obviously I assume the Cam Gear can be moved to set the Ignition Timing , which would show as the Last Settings shown .?

Timing looks good . Not an expert , just a learner ……..

Looks like everything has been apart and painted. It is possible to put the cam gear on inside out or flipped over. If this is the case none of the marks will be in the proper relationship to the crankshaft gear. Somewhere on this site is a valve timing chart. Search valve timing.

Have never seen the marks on both sides. The marks should be on the same side of both gears (outside).

Cool Re: Stover Cam - Crank Reference Marks

Correct marks on Cam - Crank Gears are only on 1 Face … That's what I have .

Thinking there should only be 2 reference marks really as it is EX and Trip Timing . As stated earlier , the ref marks line up , or set last for trip ignition , timing , ex timing has already been performed , comprende

Cool Re: Stover Cam - Crank ref marks

As can be seen alignments occurring , the mark being pointed to is the crank gear mark or ref , that eventually lines up with Trip Ignition approx. 10 deg BTDC . Although I have shown it here as aligned with governor weight centre , crank position half through , , serial number position on outer flywheel , ' gib ' key to the right horizontal .

The timing marks are to set the cam so the valves open and close at the right time . they have nothing to do with the spark setting. you get the valves right then set timing to how much advance you want .
