Default Onan 12.5? Serial #C890217401 - the 7 might be a Z

This past Saturday I picked up what I suspect is a 12.5 JC. I can verify it is a 12 wire but I'm not 100% sure what model it is. It has an ID sticker instead of a plate and the model number is wiped and unreadable. The serial number is C890217401 the best I can tell. The 7 in the serial number might be a Z. Can the model number be deciphered with just the serial number alone?

Overall, I'd describe the generator as being in kind of rough condition. It's complete other than the carburetor has been removed but it came with the generator in a box. The carburetor might not be salvageable form the looks of it. I have another 12.5 JC 12 wire. If not anything this one’s a spare. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. If I didn't already have enough Onan's I'd put the effort into this one restoring it to running condition. I don't think it would take much but I have enough to do without taking on another project. The seller couldn't tell me anything about the running condition because he picked it up in a deal somehow. He never did anything while he had it other than trip over it in the way.

From what I have seen, but could surely be proven wrong, it seems that most all of the late model "J" series sets, AA spec on, that are re-connectable have the B150 option or full power in either phase.

Now what to do? I guess its a good thing? This generator is rough in my opinion but someone else might not see it my way. I guess I'll keep it around and put some effort into seeing at least what it might take to see it making power.

Most definitely worth a look see! It could end up being a good runner with a little work!

I picked up a 30EC that later I found the motor rusted up, I'm working on getting a new one in it just for the heck of it.

I bought the generator as is where is with the understanding itís not running. I wagered with the seller accordingly and we agreed to whatever flaws it might have. The carburetor came with the generator in a box. There is a noticeable oil leak in front of the engine behind and or around the bottom of the fan cover. It appears the leak might be coming from the oil filter. Youíd think whoever owned the generator before the person I bought it from would have taken to time to address the issue if the leak was seemingly coming from the filter. I expect there is a front crank seal and perhaps the leak could coming from there. I haven't had a chance to inspect the generator other then giving it a quick glance for the obvious. Itís evidently been used perhaps beyond is intended purpose.

From what I see, I would give a shot.

Pressure cooled sets can make a small oil leak look like a big mess. Pull the fan shroud and the cover from the back side of the cylinders, give it a good bath so you can see what is going on. If you do not have a pressure washer, take it to the car wash before you unload it.

I would have to wonder why the carb was removed, but there is not much to them as long as all the parts are there and it is not "broken".

Ford 6? If so, at least in this part of the country a swap would be dirt cheap for a wrecking yard long block.
