Yes I know I must pray to the Onan gods for forgiveness , but I couldn't resist myself. It was free, only 12 miles from me. ALUMINUM Pushrod broke in 1/2 , and dead oil pressure sensor.

It didn't deserve a new pushrod , so I gave it what it needed. I took a rusty steel plant rod out of the garden and made it into a pushrod. Runs fine now.

That's funny!!

Evidently there was enough margin in the valve spring to control the valve train with the presumably heavier steel pushrod....

Wanted to see if made AC before I put money into it. Engine does make a racket, like it's ready to self destruct. Suspect an aluminum rod would not cure it, but when I get a chance I suppose I could grab an aluminum plant stak out of the garden and try it.

Steel is 3X density of aluminum. Was meaning to calculate if inertial force of steel rod was significant relative to ~ 25 ?? pound valve spring force, but didn't get around to it. Extra mass also would bring down the resonant natural frequency of spring and rod (mass) system a bit, could oscillate if comes down to engine freq.

Even though I don't like the idea of a aluminum pushrod, the real problem was a crummy design. They used a sharp edged heavy sheet metal rod "guide" that was only held in place by ONE bolt. It rotated and dragged on the rod till it finally wore, grabbed and snapped. The "guide's" only purpose was to make it easier to install the "rocker arms".

I got a 1999/2000 Generac for almost free (I donated $20 to the local Ham radio club to get it out of the basement). Labeled as a Sears Craftsman, 4.2 kW, 240 / 120 and 12VDC, pull or electric start. All I had to do was flush the tank and clean the carb. Runs great.

BUT, it runs at 3600 rpm and is NOISY. I just love the 1800 RPM Onan's. With the decent muffler I have on it, its is smooth and quiet.

Crappy weather yesterday so I fired up the 15kW Kohler and tossed the load bank on it for an hour. Maybe I'll paint it Onan green so I don't feel so guilty posting in this thread.

"What my help did to my Onan today"

I walked by the housed JC that I restored, including a meticulous paint job a few years ago and found a 2" pipe die laying on top of the hood with oil running across the beautiful Onan green paint.

Needless to say, the quiet of the early morning shop was broken. His comment was "I don't think I slid it".

I do not think it will happen again.

I have a similar set up on my 5.0cck. Got the filter on sale for $13 and it fits great.

Cranked up the 15RDJC for Earth Day. My own brand of (Onan) "green" electricity.
