Johnny is that lifting bracket factory? It doesn't look right.
Looks like too much leverage action going on. Usually the bolts are right near the bend of the angle iron.

100% factory. 100% positive. It will only fit one way and and look at the parts manual diagram compared to my picture. Note the position of the bracket in relationship to where the carburetor would mount to. Ignore the highlighted yellow head gasket (26). I marked that as a part I needed awhile ago.

I didn't see the 3-rd bolt. Good design. Good paint job

Is that bolt #42 tapped into cover or down to head? Hopefull to head.
Mine doesn't have the lifting bracket

I seem to remember seeing the angle iron running parelle with crank spin axis, but maybe that's on JCs

The larger diameter bolt that mounts directly to the top of the valve cover is 40 in the diagram. It is a 1/2-13 x 1-1/4" bolt part#800-0091 whereas the other two bolts are 5/16-18 x 1-1/4" bolts part#800-0030.

The JC have the lift bracket as you described.

Ray, my JB lifting bracket is attached to the valve cover with one bolt.

My 1965 JB has a bracket that looks like yours with 1 large bolt only holding it to the valve cover.
My 1985 JB has a bracket with 1 large bolt threaded into the valve cover and 2 holes that accept 2 valve cover bolts as well.
Both brackets are oriented with the angle legs parallel to the sets length.

Ray
The info I gave above is not totally correct. Only the 1 bolt bracket is oriented parallel to the sets length.
The 3 bolt bracket is mounted as shown in Johnny's post #19 picture.

JohnnyC-looks like the same bracket on the set im looking at, thanks. Also thanks to all others who posted, very busy, have not been on for 2 days.

UPDATE- seller is not to motivated, only managed to get 1 phone call answered, and one e-mail answered, ????? last contact i asked for pick of control box to see if it was toast and nothing sense then. Seems like this is the story on all JB's i locate which are few.

Going to try another call and e-mail, really would like pic b4 driving 1 1/2 HR. and possibly waste my time. Or if i get through by phone i will hit him up with the boat anchor or runner situation and feel him out where he stands w/price.

Looks like there are 2 kinds of brackets, the one you have Leon, and the one JohnnyC has. I guess the main factor is the way it is attached, and by what, and where.

At this point i cant even get a response, whatever business the seller has, they are very busy. Nothing more frustrating than NO response.

Apparently Onan at a later date changed the JB lifting bracket arrangement. However, I do not believe it applies to your factory build spec S. I do know Onan cautioned users not to attach additional weight to the lifting bracket. I have had no problems lifting my JB. One must take sure that single bolt bracket is installed properly before attempting to use it.

SO- another e-mail and phone call, no response.

Have a 4 day weekend, so i will call again today and hope to get answer. Just hate to go see it without pic of control box, but if they answer i could feel him out on the price and hit him with the boat anchor, sight un seen, on the way w/cash story, would imagine its a runner coming from a grocery store as backup.

Keep your fingers crossed, i think 200.00 MAX as a non runner could still part it out for that. Just the tri-fuel carb and starter would help cover cost.

FWIW, if I were you, I would drop all contact with the seller. He has your email and phone number, and if he wants to sell he can get back to you. The ad was dated Feb 11, and it looks like you responded immediately. So he knows there is a motivated prospective buyer, and he's playing hard to get. Or maybe he's just a "character". If it sits for several weeks, he will eventually realize there is not a long line of buyers with cash in hand waiting to pounce on his cold hunk of metal sitting on the ground. When you start thinking about parting it out to get your money back, it means you are willing to pay more than it is worth. You are getting emotionally attached to this generator, something you should never do for any prospective purchase. If he does sell it to someone else, don't worry, another one will come along.

The factory lifting bracket. Has three bolts single hole. Made to only lift the genset. Not much else. No battery, skid plate, fuel tank.

Agreed, if you want it for a price, can't keep after seller. That lets him know your hot to buy, and he'll firm up on price.

Seller figures he's got a hot buyer so he may wonder if he priced it too cheap. That's what I always worry about when someone quickly pounces on something I have on CL.

Unless I'm willing to pay asking price I let ad sit for 2-3 weeks before making contact. Lets him get soft on price when he realizes no one wants it.

Squid trap, the seller is ignoring you. I am positive. He don't want to do crap other than selling it. I contacted the seller pretending I was interested and offered $250. He may accept it (he is not sure yet) but told me to bring a few people to remove it. My gut feeling is he will most definitely take $250 with no questions asked. Just so you know, I have no intention to buy this JB since I already have one, just trying to see if the seller is alive.

I would most definitely help Squid trap, but the seller is in the southern part of this state which is about 2 hours or more away. Since I got the seller responding to me I could setup the deal and give all the info to Squidtrap and since he is much closer he could show up and pretend to be me.

Gotta love Craigslist. Everything is either priced like its made of Unobtainium or perhaps if its stolen and being sold for meth money. Makes you wonder if CL actually charged a commission if a fair portion of the stupidity would get weeded out. But, where would the fun be in that!

Good luck with your purchase. As others have said, don't get fixated on ANYTHING on CL. It seems like an alignment of planets when something you actually get to purchase before anyone else shopping CL is:

A) Reasonably priced, B) Is what it says it is, C) The seller is responsive, polite respectful human being, D) Its not 1000+ miles away.

Of course sellers have their own horror stories. Seems like there should be a better way...

As JohnnyC is demonstrating, Cash and no questions usually works if someone just wants to get rid of something.
