Default Onan 4KY Hot Starting

I am using this 4KY in place of my 4.0 BF while I rebuild it. Yep, I don't like it either. It runs fine but when I shut it off hot, it will not restart. It will start up if it sits for a good bit. It really gets hot while running but I'm told that they that is normal. Do these have a hot shut down switch? I really haven't tried to trick it into starting yet so I'm just asking if the forum has something to look for before I have at it. Thanks Frank

From the few that I have worked on. They are hard to start hot. Which is one reason I stopped working on them.

Does it have a PRIMER button to prime the carburetor? Most in motor homes, you push the stop button and the fuel pump runs and primes the carb. If you shut down a hot engine, the fuel in the carb will boil out.

I will try pushing it to stop and see if that does it. I'll post an answer when I'm sure. Thanks

See if it has that feature. If the start stop control is right by the generator, listen for the fuel pump to chatter when you push the stop button. Check you manual and see if you have that feature.

Yes, it has the prime feature. Next time it won't start I'll try it.

Good oil! Have it in my JB, my Honda powered pressure washer and my 4.5hp Kawasaki powered John Deere self propelled mower.

My Dad had a 1963 Porsche 356 that he bought in 1965. He DROVE that car and didn't baby it. About 1972, He had let an exhaust valve get tight and it had low compression in one cylinder. It had about 90,000 miles on it. From day ONE, that engine always had Rotella Conventional 30wt used in it. He would buy it in a case of 24 quart CANS. My Dad was a machinist/mechanical engineer and knew how to precisely measure parts. He could NOT find any appreciable wear on any of the crank journals, minimal wear on the cylinders and pistons or valve stems. This was a 75 hp, 1600 cc, dual carburetor engine. I rebuilt it for him and made it a 1720 and did a little port clean up. He LIKED it!
He gave me the car around 1987-88.
