And look at that- the first one clearly states 115 volt, yet the device looks to me like it dates from the "110 volt era" lol. I guess it could be from a later time, maybe even the '50's, eh?

How about frequency ? Where I grew up in Ontario it was 25 cycl and came from Niagra Falls Canadian side. In 1948 they changed it to 60 cycle and we got a new 3 HP Woods grain grinder free . Our old one was 1.5 HP. Cheers Bill H.

Southern California remained on 50 cycle power for quite some time as I understand it. I remember my dad (born in '35) saying that he remembered the change to 60 cycles. I got quite a few 50 cycle motors from my grandfather, that he had saved. Of course they work fine on 60 cycles. Would be really neat to have some 25 cycle motors. I saw a ~100 hp 15 cycle motor once. It was HUGE for just 100 hp lol.

Frank, I have one very similar to that one, but it's white enameled steel. Missing its cord, which is an odd connector, and I need to repair the element. Pretty neat though, definitely an oldie. Don't recall the make off hand. Pretty sure it's 110 volt.

Okay.........I'll settle this voltage thing for everyone. I have THE BOOK, from the early 1960's that states that "117 volts is nominal". There. Now you have the truth!

......or at least as that writer understood it.

It does seem like a lot of equipment from that era stated 117 volts. Like a compromise between 115 and 120. I believe that I have seen 118 as well.

Of course they tell me down Mexico way they have 127/220Y, 60 cycles of course.

Although I am also told that the actual voltage down there is, you get what you get.

Try this one on for size: 121V.

Several years ago, we vacationed in Cancun. Being an electrician, I always checked out electrical work wherever I went. (I know, it's a sickness.) YIKES, some of the work I saw in Mexico was downright scary. I think I took pictures. If i find them, I'll scan and post them for your amusement...or horror.

I have a friend that used to run a pre-school. When things were passed out to the kids; a treat, candy, toy, etc., some would protest that another kid got the one they wanted. My friend made a rule that the kids had to live by; "You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit!" To this day, we jokingly say that phrase when someone complains about something they got. (or didn't get.)

So you probably do this too- walk into a building with an open ceiling, like a restaurant, and critique the pipe work....

121, eh? I can only imagine how amusing the conversation that led to that decision would have been to listen in on!
