Default Found an Onan AK today

I came across this little gem in a barn today. It's in perfect condition. Paint looks like new. Gas tank smelled like varnish so we drizzled a little fresh gas in the carb and with a couple pulls it fired and run just enough to make the bulb on the end glow a bit.

It's one heavy little gen set.
Can anyone tell me the build date?
What's it worth?

I offered $200 for it so I might be able to get as many as you want if he takes it.

Seriously, it looks almost new. I knew it was old and was shocked at its condition.

A friend of mine bought a warehouse full of fire department stuff. It was on a skid with some other old Winco sets. The muffler still has most of the paint on it.

He delivered it to me this afternoon. Would only take $100 for it because it won't stay running. If we put a dash of gasoline down the intake it will fire and make power but as soon as that's gone, it dies.

Is that a fuel pump below the carburetor? It appears to have a primer lever on the side. The lever has what I think is the remains of a spring. It stays in whichever position I move it to.

I'm certain the problem is fuel. Either the float is stuck closed or the pump (if that's a pump) isn't working.

The petcock on sediment bowl is open.

What's the best place to start Billy?

Wow that is a clean onan! I would remove fuel lines at the pump and squirt some wd 40 in and see if the diaphram losesns up.. there are diaprhram rebuild kits online for 20 bucks.. after sitting so long it could be dried out

May be time for a oil change after 7 years

Thanks

I fell in love with it when I seen it.
Sorta like a little puppy sitting alone in a corner.

I'm going to get it running and maybe use it here or there. I have a 15.0 JC on wheels if I need serious power.

I would start with the pump. I have a cck in the shop for service. 1978 model hasn't run it ten years. Put some oil in the pump let it set for an hour. Spun it over started just fine. If the pump is working. You may need to clean out the carb.

Very nice - Sweeeet I don't even think twice about it - pumps like this get rebuilt/replaced (mechanical/electrical/vacuum style), gravity-fed, or converted to propane. If age didn't get it, the ethanol will. Even if it's just stuck or dirty now and you get it working, it probably won't last. Diaphragm gets stretched and might even work, but fuel still permeates through it. Smell the oil.. The nose knows

It runs like a top. Fuel pump was working. I removed the carburetor bowl and sprayed the float and needle area down with carb cleaner. Tickled the float a few times then put it back together. It started on 3rd pull.

Next is to change the twist lock receptacles with a few duplex but; I really like the nostalgic setup it has.

Maybe just run a new cord out of the box and put a recep on the end of that?

S C H W E E E T little machine!
If you go to an electrical supply house, you will find some single, three prong plug outlets that will fit in the same holes. It would be ashamed to cut that outlet plate. Make up an adapter cord with a twist lock on the generator end and then run it to a conventional box with a duplex outlet.
Here is that outlet I am thinking about AND they are 20 amp rated: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Single-3-Pro...0AAOSwNyFWdNfu

Yeah, I'm reluctant to change anything on it. Probably seems silly to some people but anything 54 years old in pristine original condition is an unusual find.

It takes 2 men to lift and carry it anywhere. I intend to use it and exercise it from time to time so sitting it on one of those 4 wheel carts seems like the best option. Wouldn't be much trouble to run a piece of SO cord out the bottom of the Onan box into a 4x4 box with GFCI receptacles in it.

If the Neutral is tied to the frame, Ground ( I do not know if it is.) , would the GFI still work?

I think so. That's how we have a 10k & 6k hydraulic wired on fire trucks but we're using GFI circuit breakers.

As I understand it: a GFI is looking for the current to balance on both sides (Line & Neutral). Any imbalance implies some current is going somewhere else and causes it to trip. But that's just how it was explained to me.

Finally had a chance to put this little guy on a load test.

1,500 watt electric space heater drops the voltage to 100 and the governor has the carb tapped out. That's all there is and there ain't no more.

I tried adjusting the main jet but it was right where it needed to be. The engine sounded good. Nice and smooth, never stuttered.

is this the norm on little Onans?

Not in my experience, IF the load is actually 1500W, I would be looking at the point gap/timing. In 1963, when Onan sold a 1500W set, it WAS 1500W, not 1499. RIP, D.W. Onan.
